Two Miami players selected in NHL draft

OXFORD — Miami University junior Alec Martinez and incoming freshman Justin Vaive were selected Saturday in the fourth round of the National Hockey League entry draft.

Extras

Vaive was selected by the Stanley Cup-champion Anaheim Ducks as the 92nd overall pick, after which Martinez was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings as the 95th pick.

Martinez, who helped the RedHawks advance to their second straight NCAA Tournament earlier this year, was the highest scoring Miami defenseman in his first full season as a starter with 24 points (9 goals, 15 assists).

Vaive is a 6-foot-5, 210-pound forward. His father, Rick, spent 13 seasons in the NHL and was a 50-goal scorer three times.
