Oxford arts center a busy place Friday

Staff Report

Friday, October 12, 2007

The Oxford Community Arts Center will host Second Fridays Art Evening, a celebration of the arts from 6 to 9 tonight.

This free event will include music, exhibits of visual art and refreshments. Members of the Artists Collaborative will host Open Studios on the third floor of the Arts Center giving guests the opportunity to view creative art space, as well as purchase one-of-a-kind artwork directly from the artists.

Extras

The Oxford Community Arts Center will again host Music After Hours beginning at 8 p.m. in the North Parlor. The duo "Standard Fare" performs music featuring Brenda C. Kayne on piano and vocals, and Joe Leonard on bass.

The Oxford twosome enjoys creating fresh arrangements from the popular repertoire of the '30s and '40s. Leonard has been playing bass for many years and frequently plays with his father's band in Oklahoma. Kayne performed turn of the century music many years ago and since then has been a voice teacher, choir director and composer.

Prints to Books is an evening of art activities designed for families, children, adults and seniors. During the event participants will be able to choose from a variety of activities — simple bookmaking, designing a photographic frame, printmaking demonstrations, seeing an artist's book work in progress and taking the self guided Architectural Mystery Tour.

The event will also take place from 6 to 8:30 tonight.

Prints to Books is a part of a larger artistic project Building Memory/Inventing the Future, funded by the Oxford Community Foundation, and the Ohio Arts Council and directed by Diane Stemper, artist and educator.

"The Creative Artists of Elda" a children's art exhibit will be on display in the south wing of the first floor. This display was created by the children at the Elda Elementary School in Ross.

Also on display will be "Partners In Art," a children's art exhibit created by 2½- to 5-year-old students of Diane Stemper. This display also hangs in the south wing near the ballroom.

Ballroom Dancing will begin at 8 p.m. with instruction by Nancy Sturgeon and Janet Holmes. Open dancing will be from 9 to 10 p.m. Cost is $5 per person with all proceeds going to the Oxford Community Arts Center. No sign up is required.

The Oxford Community Arts Center is located at 10 S. College Ave.
