Longtime Shawnee coach coming back to his alma mater to coach coaches.

SPRINGFIELD — Dave Marshall is going home again.

The longtime Shawnee High School coach and current women's basketball assistant at Urbana University has been hired to be the athletic director at Greenon High School, Marshall's alma mater.

Marshall takes over for former AD Barb Jenkins, who resigned May 14 after six years to spend more time with her family. Jenkins was the only female AD in Clark County.

The hiring became official at the last Greenon Local Board of Education meeting.

Marshall is excited about going back to Greenon after spending 35 years at Shawnee before becoming a physical education professor at Urbana University. He served as AD at Shawnee from 1998-2000.

"It's going to be challenging, but fun," Marshall said. "It was unexpected, but it's a step forward."

One thing Marshall will miss is coaching. He assisted Wittenberg University coach Larry Hunter from 1978-81. He later became the Shawnee boys basketball coach in 2000 and led the team until 2005. He was District Coach of the Year in 2004.

"I'll be coaching coaches more than I will players," Marshall said.

Jenkins will continue to teach and coach softball.

"It's in my blood," Jenkins said in a press release from the school.

Marshall said he's sure he'll have plenty of help from Jenkins.

"She'll be right across the hall from me," Marshall said. "I'll have the ability to ask her questions. She'll be a big help to me."
