An 800-meter relay team of runners from Trotwood-Madison High School and Dayton Christian's Walter Luttrell both ran well in national track meets Friday, June 20.

The Trotwood team, running as Waggoner's Raiders in honor of coach Randy Waggoner, won the 800 relay in the Nike Outdoor Nationals at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. The meet features runners who are still in high school or who just graduated.

Chris Burrows, Donte Lyons, Derricus Purdy and Michael Shaw were clocked in 1 minute, 25.18 seconds to win the national title. South Lakes High School from Reston, Va., was second in 1:26.12.

"We won the race by 25 yards," said Waggoner, who will he honored today as the Nike National High School Track Coach of the Year.

"Chris was even at first leg in 22.3 (seconds). Donte (20.5) and Derricus (20.7) blew it out and Michael (21.0) ran away from everyone. We looked good in that race. ... We didn't look too good in the 400 relay. We dropped the baton on the first exchange."

Shaw made the finals of the 100, but a slow started doomed him. He finished eighth in 10.84. Hunter Furr of Lewisville, N.C., won the race in 10.56.

Today, the Trotwood team will attempt to repeat as national champions in the 1,600-meter relay. Shaw is scheduled to run in the 200 meters and teammate Dominique Reed is in the high jump finals. He cleared 6 feet, 6 inches Friday.

Luttrell was sixth out of 15 mostly college runners in the 5,000 at the United States Track and Field Junior Nationals (age 20 and younger) at Ohio State at 15:00.92.

Luttrell, the Ohio Division III 3,200 state champ, and his twin brother, John, will attend Kentucky.

Luttrell placed the highest of several area competitors in Columbus. Cedarville's Kate Gerhardt was 14th in the discus at 139-9.

Vandalia Butler's Danny Neff was 15th in the first round of the 1,500 (3:59.52) and did not advance. Sidney's Jordan Goffena also didn't advance in the 110 (20th in 14.60) or 400 (11th in 55.49) hurdles.
