The search for a new Monroe High School varsity football coach has been narrowed down to a pool of five finalists.

Kettering Fairmont assistant coach Robert Dement, Mason offensive coordinator Darin Little, Colerain offensive coordinator Ken Meibers, Grove City defensive coordinator Steve White and Springboro defensive coordinator Nic Black were selected from a field of 17 applicants to interview for the position vacated by Jason Krause, who accepted the head coaching job at Middletown on Apr. 24.

Dement and Little were interviewed on Monday, May 12, and Meibers, White and Black had their interviews on Tuesday, May 13.

"We have a lot of good applicants. These five seemed to really jump off the page and make a good impression," Monroe Athletic Director John Singleton said. "Hopefully we'll be able to pick a great new coach for Monroe out of this group."

The first round of interviews were conducted by Singleton, incoming Athletic Director Dave Bauer, Monroe High School principal Robert Leahy, assistant principal Bob Millisor and Greg Gillen, the head of the Monroe youth football program. Singleton said that the school plans to bring the top two to three candidates back for a second round of interviews late this week or early next week. Those interviews will include Monroe Local Schools Superintendent Elizabeth Lolli and members of the school board. The school plans to offer the job to someone by May 21 and have that person ready to be presented to the school board at its May 27 meeting.

"We've researched the guys, and we want to hit the ground running," Singleton said. "We're late in the year, and we want to make sure we take care of the kids."
