WAYNESVILLE — The Madison High School fast-pitch team continues to prove that experience isn't everything.

"We lost 10 seniors last year and I don't think anyone thought we would be this good," Madison sophomore MacKenzie Shouse said Monday, May 12.

Shouse had just gone 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored as the Mohawks defeated Dayton Christian 12-0 in five innings at Waynesville High School in the first round of the Division III sectional tournament.

Last year's senior-dominated team won a Southwestern Buckeye League title but lost in the first round of the sectionals.

"This year we could be playing, on any given day, five or six freshmen and sophomores," said Madison coach Jamie Wagner, whose team raised its record to 24-2. "We're hoping for big things the next two or three years."

The Mohawks already are getting big things from pitcher Hannah Kendrick, who won for the 19th time this year by hurling a one-hit shutout. Kendrick retired 15 of the 17 batters she faced and recorded nine strikeouts.

"She's tough," Wagner said. "I personally believe she's one of the best around. With her on the mound, we have a chance to win every game. On top of that, she's a good kid."

Erica Marion's single to lead off the fourth inning was the only hit for Dayton Christian (8-5).

The Mohawks, who have won seven in a row, will return to sectional action Wednesday, May 14, when they play at home against Greeneview, starting at 4 p.m.

It didn't take long for Madison to flex its muscles.

The Mohawks scored five in the first inning and six more in the third behind the hitting of Shouse, Sarah Blevins (1-for-2 with two RBIs), Katie Young (1-for-3), Kendrick (1-for-1 with an RBI) and Hannah Fassler (1-for-2 with a walk).
