JOSH BETTS' WEB DIARY
We've been in camp for more than a week. One thing that is difficult to grasp is the constant turnover of players.
It sure isn't like college, where a guy has to do something really bad to get kicked off the team. In the pros, you can get cut for doing any little thing wrong.
Even though I spend the majority of time with the quarterbacks I'm friends with guys who play other positions. The weird thing is when you see a guy one morning in the locker room and that afternoon he is gone and a new player is at his locker.
Something that is almost as weird is seeing players you haven't seen before around camp. A couple of days ago, two players had injuries in practice and that night two new guys were in camp introducing themselves to everyone.
I usually find out about these things on the Internet before we're even told as a team.
Outside of the kicker, the quarterbacks have the fewest players competing for jobs. We spend a lot of time together so we get to know each other pretty well. My offseason roommate was another quarterback, Mike McGann.
We also had one more rookie quarterback, David Koral, that we thought was going into camp to make the QB position six deep. The night before training camp started the team released David. It just showed me how quickly things can change and reaffirmed to me how fast guys can be released.
There are only a few guys who don't have to be worried about getting cut. Everybody else thinks about it on a daily basis.
I'd be lying to you if I told you I didn't worry about the possibility of getting released. But, it doesn't dominate my thoughts.
I'm confident in my abilities and what does monopolize my thoughts is how I can become a better player.
