Boys soccer

The boys soccer team lost to Turpin Saturday, Oct. 4, by a score of 4-1, and again Monday, Oct. 6, against Harrison by a score of 2-1.

Talawanda scored first in the game against Turpin on a goal by Kody Wilhelm with an assist by Erik Humfleet.

The lead lasted 20 minutes before Turpin scored twice to take the lead before halftime. The game stayed close until the final 10 minutes when Turpin scored twice to make the final score 4-1.

The Braves also scored first in Monday's loss to Harrison, on a goal by Chris Bailer, assisted by Phillip Barr-Beare, but could not hold the lead and lost 2-1.

The loss dropped the Braves to 3-9-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the FAVC Scarlet Division.

Talawanda closes out the regular season at Colerain this Saturday, Oct. 11, and will play in the first round of the tournament at Greenville next Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Field hockey

The Talawanda field hockey team lost 6-1 at Mt. Notre Dame on Sept. 30, and earned a 3-2 win on Monday, Oct. 6, over Indian Hill.

Senior Meaghan Clark scored the lone Talawanda goal in the Sept. 30 loss.

Clark also scored the first goal of the Monday win this week over Indian Hill with an assist by Chelsea Abshire. The second goal in that game was scored by Katie Rhodenbaugh and the third was scored by senior Gabby Oder with an assist by Dani Ross.

Cross country

The Talawanda Middle School cross country runners brought the curtain down on their season by sweeping both the boys and girls championships for the Scarlet division of the FAVC on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Winton Woods.

The boys team defended their title by squeaking out a victory by 2 points. Seventh-grader Matt Snell led the way, winning the individual championship. The other scoring members of the team were Bobby Bennett, Alex Ross, Dylan Bailey-VanKuren, Sam James and Andrew Marks.

In the girls race, the score was even closer, with the Braves prevailing by a single point. Jessica Tegge and Sarah Starrett went one-two in the team scoring while Maggie Jaeger, Mira Alexander, Hanna Ruby, Maya Degennaro and Brooke Lohrey turned in strong performances.

When the score was tallied, Ross was tied with Talawanda, but the Braves' sixth runner finished before the Rams' sixth runner so the tie went to Talawanda.

With the high school section of the FAVC meet looming this Saturday, the Talawanda senior high boys continued their string of strong outings by winning both the Madison Invitational and their division of the Eaton Invitational.

Running strong at the front of the pack, Jimmy Alexander, Philip Bennet and Bryce Norris placed 2, 3 and 4 at Madison and 2, 3 and 5 at Eaton.

Konrad Norris held down the fourth scoring spot in both races, with Robbie Alexander, Josh Driscol, Glenn Janos and Tyler Forrest splitting the sixth and seventh places for the team. In the JV scoring, Talawanda swept the top five places at Madison with Joe Dowling, Nathan Mandrell, Shane Joseph, David Malone and Jamie Morton.

Konsta Antilla, Chris Cox and Malone medaled in the ninth- 10th-grade race at Eaton.

The high school girls did not finish a complete team in either race, but Rachel Turner and Katie Rhodenbaugh won individual trophies at Madison, while freshman Kayla Hawkins medaled at Eaton.

The FAVC meet is this Saturday, Oct. 11, at Harrison High School.

Volleyball

In the FAVC Scarlet conference, Talawanda is 6-1, one game behind undefeated Norwood. THS is 6-11 overall.

In FAVC Division games, Talawanda had a four-game winning match on Sept. 30 with Edgewood (25-18, 25-23, 14-25, 25-19). Karlee Bertsch had 16 digs, Casey Baxter Wilms 16 kills, five digs and four aces. Chloe Hansel had 31 assists, and Angie Farthing had six kills, three digs and two aces.

On Sept. 23, Talawanda won in three games with Mt. Healthy (25-16, 25-23, 25-15). Leading players included Katie Smith (four aces), Chloe Hansel (18 assists), Karlee Bertsch (three kills) and Angie Farthing (seven kills).

In nonleague play on Sept. 29, the visiting Big Blue (Hamilton) won in three close games (25-14, 25-22, 25-18). Top players for Talawanda were Chloe Hansel (eight assists), Karlee Bertsch (10 digs), Casey Baxter Wilms (six digs) and Katie Smith (eight assists, seven digs).

Graduating seniors Hope Fitton, Kirsten Kolb and Katie Smith were honored after the JV game on Monday, Oct. 6.

• The Talawanda seventh-grade volleyball team swept Mt. Healthy on Sept. 29 and Pleasant Run Sept. 30. The Braves conquered Mt. Healthy (25-14) (25-16) and in a double match Talawanda beat Pleasant Run. The first match was (25-16) (25-23). In the second match against Pleasant Run, the Braves rallied in the second game to win again (25-15) (28-26).

The Braves improved their overall record to 8-3 and advanced in league play to 4-2.

Freshman football

The Talawanda freshman football team evened its FAVC Scarlet Division record at 1-1, dropping a hard-fought contest to the Northwest Knights, 32-30.

Northwest scored a touchdown and two-point conversion with only seconds remaining for the victory.

Casey Abrams rushed 13 times for 120 yards, scoring three touchdowns and a two-point conversion. He was 2-for-8 passing with completions to Tony Lingsch and Sawyer Johnson.

Wes Ramsey rushed for 127 yards on 18 carries and a pair of two-point conversions.

Defensive standouts were Kyle Engel with an interception. Nate McCleese, Spencer Wade, Zack Sens, Tony Lingsch, Brandyn Kist and Alex Kane held the Knights' offense in check for the better part of the day.

The offense generated 247 total yards due to the outstanding line play from Sam Hornsby, Brian Schroder, Ben Vollmer, Brandyn Kist and Zack Sens.
