ROSSBURG — Racing fans who haven’t driven past Eldora Speedway since early February will be in for a suite surprise this weekend.
The historic half-mile dirt track’s landscape has changed with the addition of a two-story luxury VIP suite towering over the north bleachers between turns 3 and 4. The suites — eight on each floor — are nearing completion and are expected to be in use for the World of Outlaws’ visit May 8-9.
The suites can be reserved for the 2009 season, except for the sold-out Kings Royal and World 100.
Among the highlights, the elevator-equipped suites:
• Range in price for 2009 from $300 for smaller events to $2,250 for the Prelude to the Dream and the World 100.
• Are designed for 16 or 20 people (suites on the end of the tower are larger).
• Come complete with a refrigerator, microwave, sink, counter tops and a private restroom.
• Are climate-controlled and have personal public address controls.
• Include tickets and parking passes.
Eldora General Manager Larry Kemp said response to the suites has been positive.
“At first, before people really knew what we were going to do — like make them available for the fans — every thought it was just going to be for the big corporate people. But it’s not. It’s mostly race fans that are renting them,” Kemp said.
“It’s not for everybody, but it doesn’t interfere with anybody else. The people that want to enjoy the suites can do that. The people who want to sit in the grass or their favorite bleacher seat can still do that as well.”
Eldora opens its season tonight, April 10, with the Coca-Cola Spring Classic. The United State Auto Club’s national sprint cars are in action, led by defending champion Jerry Coons Jr.
USAC action resumes Saturday with the Don Branson/Jud Larson Classic.
Eldora’s stock cars also will run tonight, and the United Midwestern Promoters modifieds run Saturday.
