It’s happening.
She’s racing to become the first woman to win in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and she’s making great strides toward that goal this season.
In this her inaugural year in stock car racing, Franklin’s Sloan Henderson is starting to make waves in the Whelen’s Late Model Stock Car Series.
Two weeks ago, Henderson claimed her first career win. It happened in a heat race that was held at Columbus Motor Speedway. The feature-race win hasn’t happened yet, but there’s no doubt that it’s coming.
Just this past weekend at the tight, paved tri-oval of Kil-Kare Raceway in Xenia, Henderson qualified sixth in the field before finishing third in that night’s feature.
So far this season, Henderson has been in 12 races with eight top-10 finishes and a pair of top-5’s. Overall, she’s ranked 320th nationally in the Whelen’s Late Model Series.
You can witness possible racing history most every Friday night at Kil-Kare, when Henderson races in the Whelen Series there. Gates open at 6 p.m. Adults, $10; kids 12-15, $5; 11 and younger get in free.
Reedy rollin’
A bit further from home, Middletown driver Mark Reedy is on a tear at Concord Speedway in Midland, N.C. Competing in the Pro Late Model Series, Reedy has raced twice and has a May 30 win — his first career win in the Pro Late Model Series. According to the Concord Speedway points standings, Reedy’s other race came this past weekend, June 20th. He finished second in that race.
While most of the series competitors — racers hailing from North Carolina, California, Illinois, Florida, Arizona and Minnesota — have raced in seven events so far this season, Reedy’s two top-2 finishes have him sitting eighth in the points standings.
