CINCINNATI — Playing against the best of the best in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, three representatives from Miami University left a positive mark on the All-Star game.
Hamilton Joes first baseman Kyle Weldon did it with his glove, Cincinnati Steam shortstop Brad Gschwind did it with his bat, and Steam second baseman Jon Edgington did it with both as they led the host Blue team to a 5-4 victory against the Red team Wednesday night, July 15, at Western Hills High School’s McCartney Stadium.
“It was pretty fun to be a part of,” said Edgington, who entered the game in the sixth inning. “We did the whole pro-style showcase before the game for all the scouts, and that was the time everybody was more nervous. When the game came around, I think everyone relaxed and was just like, ‘OK, time to have fun now.’ ”
Edgington singled to center in his only official at-bat, and he also walked. Defensively, he made a nice diving stop on an infield single and then retired a batter in the eighth with a hard-charging, bare-handed play.
Weldon, who started the game at first base, also stood out in the field, making a nice scoop of an errant throw to end an inning while also throwing a runner out at the plate.
“That (the scoop) is something I’ve been working on a lot,” he said. “I never really played first until I got to college, so I’m still learning.”
Weldon struck out in his only two at-bats, but his defense more than made up for it. The run he cut down at the plate to end the fifth inning would have tied the game.
Gschwind, a Lakota West grad, took over at shortstop in the sixth inning, and in his first at-bat he hit the first pitch he saw for an RBI single.
“I saw a good pitch and took a swing at it,” said Gschwind, who finished 1-for-2. “I was just trying to hit the ball hard. This was a good time. It was fun getting to play against these kids from all over.”
