OXFORD — Miami University’s 2012 football nonconference schedule got a little less back-breaking with the announcement Tuesday that Southern Illinois is coming to Yager Stadium.
The Salukis, a Football Championship Subdivision team and a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference, will play the RedHawks on Saturday, Sept. 8 at a time to be determined.
The addition of Southern Illinois fills the gap in Miami’s schedule created after Missouri, which originally was scheduled to play in Oxford this year, moved to the Southeastern Conference. When the SEC announced its 2012 schedule, South Carolina had replaced Miami as Missouri’s opponent on Sept. 22.
Miami Athletic Director Brad Bates said he still expects Missouri to play in Oxford sometime in the future. “Mike Alden (Missouri athletic director) and I are really good friends and he’s committed to fulfilling the contract and coming to Yager.”
Miami’s original nonconference schedule would have had the RedHawks playing all four games against teams which appeared in bowls last season. The RedHawks open the season at Ohio State on Sept. 1 and also play at Boise State and Cincinnati.
Southern Illinois posted a 4-7 record last season.
