Smith's hat trick leads MU to upset

OXFORD — Reilly Smith recorded a hat trick Friday night to lift the 20th-ranked Miami University hockey team to a 3-1 upset over eighth-ranked Western Michigan at Steve Cady Arena.

Austin Czarnik assisted on all three goals and goaltender Connor Knapp made 26 saves for the RedHawks, who improve to 13-10-2 overall and 9-8-2-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Broncos fell to 12-8-5, 9-5-3-3.

The teams wrap up the series at 7:05 tonight.
