OXFORD — A season of hard knocks is starting to show results for the very young Miami University women’s basketball team.

The RedHawks defeated the Buffalo Bulls 67-52 on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Millett Hall as Courtney Osborn broke Miami’s single-season scoring record for freshmen.

It was the fourth win in the last seven games for Miami, which improved to 8-18 overall, 6-7 in the Mid-American Conference.

“It’s coming together,” said Osborn, who led all scorers with 21 points. “We’re getting more confidence with each passing day.”

“It’s starting to feel real good,” said Ashleigh Brown, the only senior in a starting lineup that also features two freshmen and two sophomores. “We’re trying to get some momentum going into the (MAC) Tournament.”

Brown matched a season high with 17 points and also grabbed nine rebounds and came up with four steals and two blocked shots for the RedHawks, who needed only a loss by Northern Illinois against Toledo on Saturday night to clinch a home game in the first round of the tourney March 6.

“If you throw our record out and just concentrate on the present, this team is playing with energy,” Miami coach Maria Fantanarosa said.

Osborn converted a three-point play with 17:43 left in the second half to break the freshman scoring record held by Kim Lancaster, the former Princeton High School standout who tallied 432 points during the 2000-01 season.

With three regular-season games remaining, Osborn has 447 points.

Sophomore Rachel Hencke added 10 points for Miami, and freshman Kirsten Olowinski contributed eight rebounds and four steals.

Kourtney Brown scored 20 points for Buffalo (7-19, 3-10 MAC).

Miami returns to the court at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Ohio.
