OXFORD — Miami University unveiled its new, $700,000, state-of-the-art video scoreboard at Millett Hall in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The home fans liked what they saw, partly because the screen showed a state-of-the-art women’s basketball team.
The RedHawks racked up their eighth straight victory by beating the Buffalo Bulls 72-51.
Outside of the bright colors from the scoreboard there was little spectacle — unlike Miami’s previous contest at Akron, where Courtney Osborn set a Mid-American Conference single-game record with 48 points in a 95-85 overtime victory which saw the RedHawks score 78 points over the final 25 minutes.
This time, Osborn scored 23 points, Kirsten Olowinski totaled 15 points and 14 rebounds and Hannah Robertson had 11 points as the RedHawks improved to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the MAC.
“We had a lot of different people step up tonight,” Osborn said.
Four different RedHawks hit at least one 3-point basket, five had steals and all nine who saw action had at least two rebounds.
“This team is taking pride on the defensive end of the court and in rebounding,” Miami coach Maria Fantanarosa said.
The RedHawks led 40-20 early in the second half. Buffalo cut the lead to 13 but could get no closer.
“In the last two games we’ve been challenged,” Fantanarosa said. “We’ve gotten sloppy, they’ve gotten close, and then we’ve gotten sharp.”
Brittany Hedderson scored a game-high 26 points for Buffalo (5-11, 0-2 MAC).
Funding for Miami’s new scoreboard came from money set aside annually to repair and upgrade campus facilities. Senior Associate Athletic Director Steve Cady said in a news release that the technology of the previous scoreboard had become outdated.
