Record FG saves RedHawks laps

OXFORD — There were three good reasons Trevor Cook’s teammates mobbed him after he kicked a 55-yard field goal with 37.3 seconds left in the first half at Yager Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 31.

First of all, it gave Miami a 24-7 halftime lead over the Toledo Rockets.

Second, it set the school record for the longest field goal.

The previous record was 54 yards set by Chad Seitz in 1995.

Miami head coach Michael Haywood provided the third reason at the press conference following the RedHawks’ 31-24 victory.

“Cook’s out on the field, he’s lining up for the field goal, I’m yelling from the sidelines if you make it we won’t run for the rest of the year (in practice),” the Miami coach said.

“They will not have to run for the rest of the year.”

Miami bests, firsts

• Jim Broadway replaced Chris DiCesare as Miami’s punter, and although he averaged only 28.2 yards on four punts, three of them were downed inside Toledo’s 20-yard line. One was downed just inside the 1-yard line by Jeff Thompson.

• Redshirt freshman Andrew Cruse had four catches for 41 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter and a career-long 29-yard catch in the third period.

• Redshirt sophomore linebacker Jerrell Wedge recorded a career-high three sacks and tied Anthony Kokal for the team lead with 12 tackles.

• Junior wide receiver Jamal Rogers made a career-high seven receptions and finished with 67 yards.

• Freshman tight end Kendrick Bruton made his first career catch, covering 7 yards, it the third quarter.

Streaks stopped

The RedHawks saw three droughts come to an end Saturday. They had lost 13 straight games overall, nine straight Mid-American Conference games and six straight games at Yager Stadium.

MU without Gafford

Miami junior safety and co-captain Jordan Gafford did not dress for Saturday’s game. He missed most of last week’s game against Northern Illinois as well after suffering a stinger, an injury which produces feelings of numbness down the neck and arms.

Gafford started the day second on the team in total tackles with 64.

Another Miami player who did not dress was true freshman tailback Roman Lawson, who hurt his knee in last week’s contest.

Picks for points

The 20-yard interception return for a touchdown by Miami true freshman Wes Williams was the first pick run back for points by a RedHawks player in four years.

Robbie Wilson returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown in a 54-13 victory over Buffalo on Nov. 5, 2005.
