OXFORD — In case anybody needed reminding, Zac Dysert showed that he is only human after all.
Miami University’s redshirt freshman quarterback saw his streak of three straight spectacular performances come to a shuddering stop Thursday, Nov. 12, as the Bowling Green Falcons dominated the second half and beat the RedHawks 35-14 at Yager Stadium.
“Zac had a tough night tonight,” Miami coach Michael Haywood said. “He was just a little flustered early. I don’t think he rebounded from those early turnovers. These are some of the growing pains we’re going to be going through.”
In Miami’s three previous games, Dysert had passed for 1,118 yards, seven touchdowns and only one interception.
Against Bowling Green, Dysert passed for 259 yards and ran for two touchdowns, but he also had four turnovers, including three interceptions, and was sacked six times.
“We couldn’t really get into a rhythm,” Dysert said. “I didn’t play very well, I don’t think anybody played up to their ability.”
The game turned sour for the RedHawks immediately when Jamal Rogers lost a fumble on the opening kickoff. Two plays later Bowling Green senior Freddie Barnes scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 19-yard run.
Barnes also caught touchdown passes of 59 and 2 yards from senior quarterback Tyler Sheehan and wound up with 10 receptions for 109 yards and three carries for 25 yards. He even completed a pass for 4 yards, and another pass which should have been a long gainer was dropped by Sheehan.
Even so, the score was tied 14-14 at halftime.
In the second half, however, it was all Bowling Green.
“This is the third game they’ve played in 12 days,” Falcons coach Dave Clawson said of the RedHawks, “and I was just hoping that if we kept coming and kept coming, that would help us out.
“In a lot of ways that’s the most complete we’ve played all year,” said Clawson, whose team kept its bowl hopes alive by improving to 5-5 overall, 4-2 in the Mid-American Conference. “I loved the way our guys kept bringing the big rush (against Dysert).”
Sheehan passed for only 199 yards, well below his league-leading average, but he finished with three touchdown passes and no interceptions.
Senior running back Chris Bullock also added to the RedHawks’ problems, running for 82 yards and a touchdown.
The loss dropped Miami’s record to 1-10, 1-6 MAC.
The RedHawks will conclude their season Wednesday at home against defending league champion Buffalo.
