Bucks win shootout after MU, OSU tie
COLUMBUS — The second-ranked Miami University hockey team played to a scoreless tie with host Ohio State on Saturday night, Feb. 27.
The Buckeyes won the shootout 2-0 to take an extra point in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings. It was just the third scoreless tie in MU history.
Connor Knapp was the goalie for Miami, and Dustin Carlson was in net for Ohio State. The RedHawks outshot OSU 36-23.
MU finished the regular season at 24-5-7 overall and 21-2-5-2 in the CCHA. The Buckeyes are 12-16-6, 10-12-6-4.
As the top seed in the CCHA tournament, Miami will have a first-round bye. It will host an undetermined squad March 12-14 at Steve Cady Arena.
RedHawks split at Louisiana-Lafayette
LAFAYETTE, La. — The Miami University baseball team is 2-3 after splitting two games Saturday, Feb. 27, at Louisiana-Lafayette.
The RedHawks won the opener 7-5 in 11 innings, with Jordan Jankowski’s three shutout innings in relief earning the win. Adam Eaton was 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and four runs, while Jon Edgington had two hits and an RBI, Brad Gschwind collected two hits and Pat Glass drove in a run.
MU lost the nightcap 13-2. Kyle Weldon homered and went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Adam Weisenburger also plated a run.
The two squads will complete their series at noon today.
MU softball team evens record at 3-3
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Miami University’s softball team improved to 3-3 on Saturday, Feb. 27, notching two wins at the Frost Classic.
Briana Burke and Jenna McGivney both had RBIs in the first game, a 2-1 victory over Oakland. Meghan Mawn added two hits, while Jessica Simpson and Meredith Linch combined on an eight-hitter with six strikeouts.
In Game 2, Linch tossed a four-hitter with six whiffs in a 7-1 triumph over Central Connecticut State. Kathryn Russette, Shannon Tillett and Alicia Hogl all had RBIs.
The RedHawks complete Frost play this afternoon against host Chattanooga.
Miami women place fourth in MAC meet
MT. PLEASANT, Mich. — Junior Kelley Miller earned 14 points for the Miami University women’s track & field team Saturday, Feb. 27, at Jack Skoog Indoor Track to help the RedHawks finish fourth at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships at Central Michigan.
Miami totaled 79.5 points while Kent State won the MAC title with 107 points. The host Chippewas finished as the runner-up with 100 points while Western Michigan placed third with 92 points.
Miller, the school’s record holder in the mile, won the mile run final in 4:58.42, while senior Amanda Mirochna crossed in fifth in the race in 5:03.44. Miller also finished fifth in the 800-meter final in 2:17.35. Miller and Mirochna also helped the ’Hawks win the distance medley relay Friday.
In the 3,000m, redshirt sophomore Rachel Patterson finished third in 10:00.62, while senior Laura Neufarth was fifth in 10:07.21. Freshman Layne Baggett took fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.72 seconds, while sophomore Rachael Clay placed fifth in the 400m final in 57.12.
Miami then picked up four points in the shot put as sophomore Alexandra Roberts placed sixth with a heave of 47-11 (14.60m), while fellow sophomore Samantha Gable finished eighth with a personal-best toss of 46-7½ (14.21m).
Senior Nicki Mitchell tied for sixth in the high jump with a leap of 5-4½ (1.64m). Sophomore Sarah Kinnaman picked up a point in the pole vault by matching her personal-best vault of 11-5¾ (3.50m) to place eighth, while junior Hope Alexander also earned a point with an eighth-place finish in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 38-10¼ (11.84m).
MU then closed the event on the track by placing sixth in 4x400m relay in 3:55.76.
