OXFORD — Members of the Miami University men’s basketball team aren’t sure why they could not hit a 3-point shot — not early, not late, not ever — in their 61-56 loss to Akron.
Miami went 0-for-15 from behind the arc, the first time the RedHawks had failed to hit a 3-pointer in 55 games, since their 49-47 loss to Kent State in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference tournament on March 14, 2008.
“That’s bad, especially in our home gym,” Miami senior Kenny Hayes said. “Those are shots we’ve got to have.”
At times the RedHawks have been spectacular from the 3-point stripe. They hit a team-record 15 treys in 26 attempts in their near-upset at Kentucky on Nov. 16, and they drilled 12 at Northern Illinois, 11 at Bowling Green and 10 at Xavier.
“Sometimes guys just miss,” Akron coach Keith Dambrot said. “I think they had some open looks.”
“I still think we have a good 3-point shooting team,” Miami sophomore forward Julian Mavunga said. “We’ve got some guys who can shoot from a lot of different positions.”
That was the case on Wednesday. The RedHawks just didn’t make any of them. Mavunga and Nick Winbush both were 0-for-4, Hayes and Rodney Haddix were 0-for-2, and Antonio Ballard, Kramer Soderberg and Orlando Williams were 0-for-1.
Winbush misses
Winbush saw his streak of 17 consecutive free throws made come to an end when he missed the second of two foul shots with 6:24 left in the second half.
Fletcher impressive
Miami senior center Adam Fletcher scored 12 points off the bench on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. He also had a spectacular breakaway slam dunk.
Saturday twin bill
Miami’s ESPN BracketBuster Game on Saturday against Southeast Missouri State will be the second half of a doubleheader at Millett Hall.
The twin bill opens with the Miami women facing Buffalo in a Mid-American Conference game. The tip-off is at noon.
Coach Maria Fantanarosa’s team stands 7-18 overall, 5-7 in the MAC, but has won three of its last six. Freshman guard Courtney Osborn leads the RedHawks in scoring with 17.0 points per game.
