OXFORD — Miami University basketball coach Charlie Coles said he likes Brian Sullivan because he is a sharpshooter with a sharp mind.

Sullivan, a 6-foot senior guard at Upper Arlington High School, signed a national letter of intent on Wednesday to become a member of the RedHawks for the 2011-12 season.

“His basketball IQ is phenomenal,” Coles said. “He’s one of those players who is smart on the court. His mental game is strong. That’s my kind of guy and they don’t come along very often. They can beat you on the court, and they can out-think you on the court.”

Sullivan averaged 18.1 points per game as a junior last season, and not all of his points were scored from just standing behind the 3-point arc and taking aim.

That’s just another one of Sullivan’s multiple qualities that impresses the Miami coach.

“He’s very unselfish, can play the one position (point guard) or the two (shooting guard), is a very good shooter, and he can get his own shot,” Coles said. “He can play with the ball and without the ball.

“We’ll have three point guards when he gets here,” Coles said, referring also to Miami freshman Quinten Rollins and junior transfer Chris McHenry, “and he can play with those guys on the court (at the same time), and if they let up, without them.”

Coles said Sullivan caught his eye not by watching him on tape, but my watching him in person at a game.

“I could see everything,” he said. “Then he came here to a basketball camp and it was, ‘I’ve got to have this guy.’ ”

The RedHawks open their regular season at 6 p.m. Friday at Millett Hall against Towson.
