OXFORD — It was an unusual night of defeat and celebration for the Miami University hockey team. The RedHawks lost a streak but gained a trophy.
The Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat the top-ranked RedHawks 4-2 Saturday night, Feb. 20, at Steve Cady Arena.
The loss snapped Miami’s 23-game unbeaten streak in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and also an overall eight-game winning streak.
After the game, however, the RedHawks were presented with the CCHA regular-season championship, which they had clinched a week earlier with a win at Bowling Green.
Miami coach Enrico Blasi said he “wanted to honor the fans for their support” with an official trophy presentation on his team’s home ice.
The trophy was presented to junior Tommy Wingels, Miami’s team captain. He deferred, however, to senior Jarod Palmer, who is having a monster season.
“Jarod’s been a huge leader all year,” Wingels said. “I thought he deserved that.”
The celebration was muted a bit by the loss.
“Obviously, we would have liked to have won tonight,” Wingels said. “We could have played better ... I don’t think we ever had it tonight. They came out and played their game.”
Blasi agreed that Nebraska-Omaha got the early momentum and kept it.
“I don’t think we had it for the most part,” Blasi said. “They really took it to us.
“It’s been a while since we had this feeling,” added Blasi, whose RedHawks had not lost a CCHA contest since Oct. 24, when they fell 3-2 in overtime at Michigan State. “I’m sure the guys will come back on Monday and be ready.”
Carter Camper scored his 13th goal for Miami, and Wingels had his 20th.
