College Insider -- West grad gets pin in his final home match for Ashland

Tony Bradberry went out with style in his final home wrestling match for Ashland University on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 6.

The Lakota West High School graduate pinned Gannon’s Ted Hoag in 5:14 at 157 pounds, the Eagles’ lone victory in a 35-6 rout.

Bradberry is Ashland’s only senior and was recognized before the match. He raised his season record to 10-9.

The Eagles (4-10) have two road matches this week, facing Heidelberg on Friday and Mercyhurst on Saturday.

Men’s basketball

Wilmington is in second place and trailing leader John Carroll by one game in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

The Quakers, 15-6 overall and 10-4 in the OAC, are getting contributions from three local freshman guards.

Brandon Candella (Lakota West) has played in every game and made 16 starts, averaging 5.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per contest.

Terell Ramsey (Middletown) has made 11 appearances off the bench and is shooting 50 percent from the field while averaging 1.9 points a game. Meshach Jackson (Middletown) has collected three points in six games as a substitute.

Women’s basketball

Senior guard Jenny McNamee (Talawanda) ranks second in scoring (11.3) while shooting 80.6 percent from the free-throw line for Niagara, which was 9-13 overall and 6-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference heading into Monday night’s game against Loyola (Md.).

• Sophomore guard Kirstie Runion (Cincinnati Christian) is averaging 17.4 minutes per game for Bluffton, which is 7-14 overall and 4-9 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Runion has made three starts this season for the Beavers. She’s notching 4.2 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per contest.

Women’s swimming

IUPUI freshman Elizabeth Bourgeois (Lakota East) closed the regular season with a strong effort Feb. 5 in a tri-meet against host DePauw and Butler.

Bourgeois won the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.03) and 200 fly (2:16.60), placing second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.02) and third in the 200 medley relay (1:58.46).

The Jaguars defeated Butler 158-96, but lost to DePauw 204-70. IUPUI will compete in the Summit League Championships on Feb. 18-20.
