GOLF INSIDER: MCS golfer enjoying recent run of success

Brooks Curry has had a whirlwind golf experience in recent days.

The 15-year-old sophomore-to-be at Middletown Christian School finished fourth overall in the four-day Middletown Men’s City Golf Championship last weekend at Weatherwax Golf Course after shooting a 301 (74-72-79-76), which was only eight strokes behind the winner.

He followed up that performance this past Tuesday and Wednesday by shooting a 149 (76-73) to finish tied for third in the 15-and-under age division and 13th overall at the 69th annual Ohio Junior Championships at Lancaster Country Club.

And, it was just last October when the then freshman finished tied for sixth overall with a two-day total of 154 in the Division III high school state tournament to earn a spot on the D-III All-Ohio second team.

‘Match’ makers

Several local golfers qualified for and competed in the Tony Blom Metropolitan Amateur Championships match play tournament at the Heritage Golf Club, but none remain for today’s title contest.

Jarryd Lentz, this year’s Middletown Men’s City champion, made it to the round of 16 before losing to Chase Conn 3 and 1. Conn, a member at Four Bridges Country Club, reached the final four before losing.

Rob Chappell, a recent University of Dayton graduate and member at Four Bridges, also reached the final four before losing.

Others reaching the round of 16 were Springboro graduate Kevin Grabeman, Fairfield graduate T.J. Wilson, Four Bridges member Pete Ebel and Brown’s Run member Dan DeVore. Lakota East grad Nick Proud made it to the round of 32, as did Fairfield’s Brad Mitchell.

Fairfield’s Jeff Sullivan and Steve Ronningen, Four Bridges members Bob Spencer, Mitch Mahoney and Adam Buckley, and Hamilton Elks member Shawn Thacker all lost in the first round.

Ace is the place

Middletown resident Doyle Whitaker recorded a hole on one on Tuesday, June 23, at Warren County’s Armco Park golf course.

Whitaker used a 3-wood to ace the 192-yard, No. 4 hole at the park. The shot was witnessed by Jim Kraft, Tom Weinen and Herb Wackler.

This is the fifth hole in one at Armco this season.
