I grew up a Cincinnati Bengals fan, but lost interest over the years because I always felt owner Mike Brown treated the club as if it were his personal fantasy football team.

Why spend money on a general manager or a squadron of scouts when that would only take away some of the satisfaction of compiling a roster yourself and competing for the high stakes of the NFL?

Nevermind that they haven’t won since facemasks were fastened to helmets, the streamlined operation meant more fun for Brown as he engaged in his hobby at our expense.

But the Bengals’ 5-2 start has gotten my attention. Carson Palmer is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league and he has surprised me with his mobility. After tanking last season, Chad Ochocinco appears committed this year (maybe the Bengals were right in not caving to his trade demands).

The team caught the biggest break in the NFL in signing Cedric Benson on a whim last season and watching him turn into the league’s top rusher.

Of course, these are the Bengals. A 20-year culture of losing is hard to overcome. But I like how coach Marvin Lewis is sounding:

“This team has a great opportunity to be good. I think they’re a more grounded team than we’ve had in the past.”

The way I see it, the Bengals could lose to anybody left on their schedule, but could beat anyone, too. It should be an entertaining ride.

I used to be a Bengals fan but the Brown family burnt too many bridges with me. I don't cheer them and I don't hate them. I expect the Bengals to lose, and if they win I feel good for friends who are Bengals fans and season ticket holders. Lord knows, with the kind of money they have spent to watch 3-13, 4-12 blood-bath seasons, they deserve an occasional win now and then.

First of all you are a fairweather fan if you just now jumped on the bengals bandwagon. You can be disgusted with some of the executive decisions but that isn't saying you are not a fan. I have been a bengals fan even though they have sucked. At least the Bengals usually are in front of the Browns every season. I think its all in the coaching. Last year doesn't count with Palmer and havlfthe defense out. The other years over the last 5 years weren't that bad.

You can be a fan and also be disgusted with some, many of the moves Mike Brown has made over the yrs. My guess is he finally got out of the way this spring and they finally had a 5-star draft.

He still should hire a GM.

About this......article? Sounds like the fifth grade teacher asked the class to write a 'story' about their favorite football team. Until 1966, I was a diehard Browns fan (Jim Brown, Dr, Frank Ryan, Fair Hooker etal.)But when the Bengals were born, I switched and have followed them all their years. I seem to remember a team owned by a MR.Rooney that for years was very, very bad. But, after all those years look at the Steelers now! I still worry about a fizzle but until it does...WHO DEY!!!
