VILLANOVA, Pa. — Corey Fisher got it started and Maalik Wayns finished the job.
Fisher scored 20 of his 21 points in the first half and Wayns had 13 of his 15 in the second, and No. 7 Villanova beat No. 24 Cincinnati 72-61 on Sunday, handing the Bearcats their first loss of the season.
Fisher made all nine of his free throws in a dynamic first half for the Wildcats (14-1, 3-0 Big East). Wayns was 6-for-6 from the line in the second half.
Villanova upped its winning streak at The Pavilion, its cozy 6,500-seat on-campus arena, to 45 straight. The streak began on Jan. 17, 2007, and now includes 19 wins over Big East teams.
Cincinnati (15-1, 2-1) started the season 15-0 for the first time since 1998-99. The Bearcats started 19-0 in 1962-63.
No. 1 Duke 71, Maryland 64: Kyle Singler had 25 points and a season-high 10 rebounds, and the Blue Devils (15-0, 2-0 ACC) extended their winning streak to 25.
Duke overcame 17 turnovers and shot 40 percent to extend its best start since 2005-06.
Maryland (10-5, 0-2) closed to 67-62 on Jordan Williams’ layup with 1:25 left, but Singler responded with a 3-pointer with 53 seconds left.
No. 3 Kansas 67, Michigan 60 (OT): Marcus Morris scored 22 points, and the visiting Jayhawks (15-0) remained undefeated.
The Wolverines (11-5) rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit and scored the last six points of regulation to tie the game at 51.
No. 11 Purdue 75, Iowa 52: Ryne Smith scored 18 points Sunday to help the Boilermakers (15-1, 4-0 Big Ten) to their 10th straight win.
Valparaiso 64, Cleveland State 58: Cory Johnson scored 20 points as the Crusaders (12-5, 4-1 Horizon) handed the Vikings their second straight defeat.
Dunbar High School grad Norris Cole had his lowest scoring output of the season with 10 points for Cleveland State (15-3, 4-2), but he pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Sinclair 82, Owens CC 66: Darrien Wilkins scored 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and Jonathan Bibbs (Chaminade Julienne) added 16 points and five boards as the Tartan Pride won their conference opener in Toledo over Owens Community College. Blake Davenport (Lebanon) came off the bench for 13 points.
