Location & description:
Located near Urbana in Champaign County. The rolling wooded hills are peppered by boulders scattered by the glaciers which shaped the region. At one end of the lake, glaciers left mounds of sand and gravel that are formed by meltwater flowing across glacial ice.
Camping:
A family camping area with 114 non-electric sites is open all year
Picnic tables, fire rings, a trailer waste station and latrines are provided
A group camp is available on the south side of the lake on a reservation basis
A camper cabin can be rented during the summer months by reservation
Boating:
Boats with motors are not permitted
Launch ramp and public docks available for sailboats and other non-motor boats
Boats can be rented at two rental facilities
Fishing & hunting:
Hunting of migratory game birds permitted when in season
Fish species include largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, saugeye and crappie
Five fishing piers located on the lake
Picnic areas:
Eight picnic areas with tables and grills
A group picnic shelter may be reserved
Additional shelter is available on a first-come, first-served basis
Trails:
Five hiking trails provide 5.1 scenic miles for walking
Red Oak and the Nature Preserve Boardwalk trails are at the east end of the lake
Pine Tree and Possum Hollow trails can be reached from the group camp area
The North Bay Trail follows the lake shoreline for 1.5 miles
Seven miles of horse trails are located near State Route 235
Swimming:
600 foot swimming beach open Memorial Day to Labor Day
Refreshment stand near beach
Scuba diving permitted except in swimming area. Divers must be accompanied by at least one person.
