Jim Morris' fishing report for June 30

Hot Topics

By Jim Morris, Contributing writer Updated 11:56 PM Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Indian Lake: Fishing continues to be good for most species. Saugeyes are hitting crawler harnesses trolled around Dream Bridge and off of the south bank. They’re also hitting twisters in the spillway. Catfish are everywhere, especially a large number of very small catfish. At the same time, a 20-pound shovelhead was taken at the spillway on a nightcrawler. Crappies are around lily pads and white bass have been caught at Dream Bridge.

C.J. Brown Reservoir: Walleyes are still biting over the humps and old roadbed. Most anglers are dragging crawler harnesses, but a few are jigging with leeches. Crappies have moved to deeper holes, but are still hitting minnows. Catfish are biting all around the lake on nightcrawlers and bass minnows. Fish around the sunken trees to catch smallmouth bass or yellow perch.

Grand Lake St. Marys: Fat bluegills are being caught off of the rocks on waxworms or redworms. Small crappies are still in the brush in the channels, but large crappies have relocated to deep water. Catfish are all over the place, hitting cut shad and nightcrawlers. Bass are hitting spinnerbaits and plastics fished around wood in the channels. Try using brightly colored twisters to catch walleyes near the west bank.

Paint Creek Lake: Crappie fishing has been good. Most are hanging out at 8-10-foot depths, hitting minnows and salt-and-pepper jigs. White bass are all over the lake, going after shiny spinners and spoons. Bass are hitting Shaky Heads, crankbaits and green/pumpkin plastics. Look for rocks. Bluegills are all over, hitting waxworms.

Rocky Fork: Bass fishing continues to be good. Look for rocky areas and toss a crankbait or a green/pumpkin plastic worm. Channel cats are hitting nightcrawlers and cut shad from the south beach to Fisherman’s Wharf. Crappies are deep — 15-20 feet. White bass are all over the lake, hitting Roostertails and Mepps. Anglers are trolling small Hot ’N Tots around the island and in front of the south beach to catch saugeyes.

Lake Loramie: Catfish are everywhere. Channel cats and bullheads are hitting shrimp and nightcrawlers. Bass fishing has been good around rocky areas with spinnerbaits and crankbaits. The best crappie fishing has been around bridges. For bluegills, find some rocks and use waxworms tipped on ice jigs.

Cowan Lake: Crappie fishing has slowed a bit with most fish moving to deep water. Anglers continue to fish off of the north shore and along the dropoff in front of the marina. Bass are being caught in weedy areas. Two five-pounders were caught last week. Crappies and saugeyes have been caught in the spillway.

Acton Lake: Crappie fishing has been good. Look for areas 12-13 feet deep and fish with large minnows at depths of 8-10 feet. Try to find dropoffs. Bass are hitting white spinnerbaits and Shad Killer Rapalas off of rocky points. Saugeyes have been caught all around the lake by casting or trolling nightcrawlers or bass minnows. The best catfishing has been in the evenings with nightcrawlers or sucker chubs.

Caesar Creek Lake: Fish the flats for saugeyes. Anglers are jigging with nightcrawlers or bass minnows or trolling with crawler harnesses around the island. Crappies are deep, around structure. Use jigs tipped with large minnows. The best catfish fishing has been in the creeks with nightcrawlers and cut shad. Bass fishing has been good early and late with topwater baits or spinnerbaits fished around wood.

Lake Erie: Walleye fishing slowed over the past week. The best reports came from West Sister Island, Niagara Reef and the area around Lucy’s Point of Middle Bass Island. Yellow perch fishing is improving. The best areas have been around Ballast Island, Lakeside and the southeast corner of Kelleys Island. There have been good catches of largemouth bass reported from the harbors and nearshore areas from Catawba to Marblehead.
