Sheriff to Obama: Keep an eye on immigration

In a letter to President-elect Barack Obama, Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones is urging the new administration to keep illegal immigration foremost on its mind as it takes office amid numerous immediate challenges.

Jones, a Republican, has long been an advocate of immigration reform. He even took out an advertisement in a local newspaper when Sen. John McCain was visiting the area during his campaign criticizing McCain for what Jones saw as a lack of attention to immigration issues.

The following is the text of Jones’ letter:

The Honorable President-Elect Obama:

Congratulations on your successful campaign for President of the United States of America.

This letter is in regard to illegal immigration, illegal drugs and violence. The past eight years have seen an increase in drugs coming from Mexico to the United States. The violence on the Mexico - United States border has increased to the point of United States citizens being kidnapped, taken into Mexico and held for ransom.

The drugs coming from Mexico to the United States is out of control and it appears we have no policy to control any of these serious problems. I believe they need to be addressed by the new President.

Sir, I realize you have a great number of issues to address as you take office. Please give consideration when addressing the issues I have mentioned. Hopefully the members of Congress, Senate and Representatives can come up with a policy that will save this country from the mire before the conditions get worse.

We all know that it will take compromises from all sides. When planning policy for these issues, please consider the needs of the front line law enforcement agencies, jails and prison systems.

Again, congratulations on your election to the Office of President of the United States of America. Thank you for your time.

Richard K. Jones

Dear Sheriff Jones, Please be aware that only half of undocumented immigrants are Latino and they come from all over Latin America, not just Mexico. So too, close to half of the immigrants in the US without papers, entered on valid visas that expired or were otherwise rendered invalid. Finally, please be sure to ask for more patrols at the Northern border too since in the past few years drug traffic from Canada has steadily increased. Oh wait, they don’t count, they’re white.

This is bigotry at its finest. First, there are serious grammatical errors in this letter. Second, the subject matter is not clearly defined, nor are the arguments clearly conveyed. Third, the writer presents no clear or convincing evidence that the President-elect should do anything about this. I don’t know what morons elected this idiot, but it’s a shame that he will represent you once again. Is it not time for someone who is educated, well-versed, and will actually do the job of Sheriff of Butler County? Apparently the citizens of that county wanted another politician…

There were almost 80,000 of us so-called morons that elected Sheriff Jones for His Second Term. I would suggest that you do your homework about the difference between a Politician and a Law Enforcemnet Officer, before you start slandering the good citizens of Butler County. Oh Yes, by the way he was elected to uphold the laws of the State Of Ohio and the Consitution Of The United States. But I guess someone with your intelligence would already know that. Or would You?

My wife is from a country in Europe, she is here legal. It took a year to get her here and a book of paper work that has to be filed with the INS and $100”s of dollars for every form that was filed. If anyone from any country want to live here for what ever reason they may have then do it the RIGHT way as I did. DO IT RIGHT or GO HOME!!!! LEARN ENGLISH or GO HOME!!!! GO get them Sheriff Jones!!!!

If Dick was really sincere he wouldn’t just talk about Mexico. We have many illegals in the US. They come from all over the world. Dick mainly is concerned about Spanish speaking population in Butler County. He actually is being a bigot. I truly don’t see his letter being sincere. I am offended by it. And to the one who says 80,000 people voted for him, no they didn’t. Go back and look at the election results. Buter County doesn’t have 80,000 people.

I was driving down Hanover Street this morning when I was stopped by two fellows in a pickup truck loaded with fencing materials. How shocked I was to see that the driver was Barack Obama and the passenger was Bill Richardson. They said they were on their way to the Mexican boarder to put up a fence and were looking for Rick Jones to see if he wanted to ride along.

What a bunch of racists. It costs thousands of dollars to enter this country legally. Mexicans and Central Americans are dirt poor because of corruption in their governments, rule by warlords, and semi-authoritarian regimes. ALL of our ancestors (with the exception of native Americans) who came here before the 20th century didn’t have to deal with immigration laws like we have now. Anyone wanting better lives for themselves and their families were welcomed to America with open arms. It’s a shame that many Americans can’t get over their racism and bigotry to open the country to immigrants who are fleeing oppressive regimes, fleeing poverty, and fleeing religious persecution. Tear down the Statue of Liberty - it is not relevant to this country anymore. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. I sure hope you don’t call yourselves Christians, because you certainly are not. [And Dave, an answer to your question - Butler County has a large latino population.]

I’d like to ask why you anti-immigrant people hate America? Are YOU going to wash dishes in the restaurants, pick crops, clean up after people? Here’s a clue - because of the crackdown on illegal immigration and deportations, unpicked oranges are rotting in their fields. There’s no one to pick them. I am p.o.’d at you bigots for helping to wreck our country. Instead of spending billions on arresting taxpaying workers and deporting them, this country should be working to change immigration laws so more people can get in with less hassle. It shouldn’t cost thousands of dollars to get into this country. You people should be counting your blessings that you were born in this country and don’t have to face what others do. Maybe you should spend your energy on prayers rather than hate.

Point conceded — a majority is not necessarily considered as moronic in this country. Failure to understand logic, however, is commonly considered as such. Take for example, the above point from AEH. Per their conjecture, the woman, Gloria Applegate was murdered because a gentleman was illegally in this country. Apparently, a girl was raped, again, because a person was illegally in this country. Yet, I would find that a quick internet search yields that there are many legal immigrants, and natural born-and-bred citizens of this country, who commit crimes. Hypothetically, if we were to stop all illegal immigrants from coming into the country, would that solve the problem? AEH seems to think so. Apparently, immigration is barrier to a modern utopia. By the way, for my colleague Lowell Bower, I would ask for a citation of the line in the U.S. Constitution which states that this country is closed to illegal immigrants. I needn’t tell you that it doesn’t exist; apparently you know my Constitution better than I, and you’d never concede the point. NEVERTHELESS, your drug problems, murders, rapes, assaults, etc. cannot be all traced back to illegal immigration. Check the files yourself—you’ll find that murders in Butler County are rarely the result of illegal immigrants. But your sheriff sure wants you to think so. Making you believe that he can solve your problems by blaming in on a larger entity/problem is an easy and cowardly way out. One that I would expect a politician to take, and thus, Lowell, the term I have used. Also, the word you wanted was “libel”, not “slander”. But it doesn’t matter, as a truthfully printed statement is not considered as libelous in a court of law.

Smith I wouldnt call some one who rapes children a “gentleman” The fact is that if our government was doing its job a lot of crimes that are carried out by illegal aliens would not be happening right now in this Country. What part of illegal cant you people understand. And oh yea by the way show me in any of my post where I refered to any particular race.If you didnt come legally go home or be deported. We need the jobs you are taking and by the way some of the jobs you are taking for less money than Americans earn is driving our wages down as well.

There is no doubt this ilegal immigration has caused more problems than anyone could have ever imagined. First of all lets get the election stuff out of the way. The reasoning for the 40+ thousand votes for Richter was because of Democratic voting tickets only. Enough said about that. Second, all of you people that think that the Sheriff is racist because he wants to get rid of the illegals is just to funny. The Sherrif is taking action against the illegals because of the elevation in crimes that are committed by them. Now you can call bullcrap all you want to, but you people jumping on these so-called poor illegal aliens are IGNORANT of the crimes these people commit on a daily basis. They (majority) on a daily basis, not stereotyping this is factual, drive a vehicle without a license and insurance. It is not if, it is a matter of when they get behind the wheel after drinking or not drinking and crash into someone and destroy another vehicle and/or injure or killed someone. Then after the crash they take off running and you don’t ever see them again and guess who pays for it. The victim. Then you have the illegals who do get caught because they are injured and can’t run and go to the hospital. Guess what? We have to pay for that. This is just one scenario and there are many more. So all you whining, ignorant, i want to support something because I have no idea what the heck I am talking about people, I feel bad because they are broke and come from a crime riden country, SHUT UP. If you feel so bad for them why don’t you go adopt an illegal? Hey that sounds like a great idea. Why don’t we have a program called adopt an illegal. All you illegal supporters go find an illegal and take them home with you and pay for them to become legalized. Yeah right. Lets hear the bullcrap reasons why you won’t do that. All yeah because you are democrats and want free handouts and/or everything handed to you anyways, without working for it. This is America and is made of nothing but immigrants. However, these illegals are slapping those that came to Ellis Island, broke and scared as hell, in the face. I am sure all you whiners have someone that came to this country as an immigrant in your family tree the right way and should be mad as heck because they have slapped your family in the face. Deport em Sheriff.

Dear ezed, I appreciate your kind remarks. I wish to convey that I do not intend to boast; this is how I speak and talk on a daily basis. I seek not to convince you of any level of intelligence, but merely to communicate my thoughts. I am happy that you can pick “democrats” versus “republicans” versus “libertarians” from blogs; I would suggest that your point about intelligence isn’t the reason why, however. Rather it is based upon the substance of one’s writing. I have known many of other political persuasions than my own who utilize the level of speech and thought that I prefer to use to communicate. Let us not discriminate against it. To clarify the other claim; I refer to folks who vote for a candidate for sheriff on the basis of his near-legislative political views as morons. Not simply that I disagree with them, but that one would waste a vote for an uneducated gentleman such as the sheriff — and I’m defining “uneducated” solely based upon the letter inscribed above. Further, I know several democrats who prefer to use other words than “moron” for those they disagree with. From the subject of your post, it seems that you view democrats as a lesser part of this country; that is, they are not equivocal to the far superior “republicans”. My suggestion is to define “human”, then define “citizen”. Then, based upon those definitions, tell me how democrats don’t fit into that. If you could do that, I would accept your argument that democrats are inferior. I am not claiming that they are superior; I am claiming that they are equal on the primal, humanistic level.

Americans have become disconnected to the enormous amount of taxes we pay. If we all had to sit down and physically write a check to pay our taxes every payday, the outcry would result in a revolution. Legal Immigration is one thing. ILLEGAL immigration is just that….illegal! If you are paying taxes, you are paying for their education, housing, food, medical care, etc. Billions are spent each year. Some hospitals along the southern borders are going under because they can’t legally turn them away. Birthright citizenship should be eliminated. There was a need for this when the country was growing in the early 1900’s, but no more. If any of you want to actually do anything about illegal immigrants, then go to NumbersUSA.com and become informed and become a member. It’s free, but this organization is the reason that a lot of bills that were written to give even more away to illegals have been voted down. NumbersUSA.com!

It is my opinion that Sheriff Jones is the most racist man in Butler County. How is it that he is able to spend all of his time “fighting crime” that apparently only comes from “Mexico”? Isn’t his job to stop the crime in our county. I guarantee that the only citizens in Butler county that are comitting crimes are not those that are “undocumented”. I also guarantee that all of the Latinos living in our area are not undocumented. Our sheriff, who is supposed to be ther person upholding the law is not only racially profiling these people, he is also not being very politically correct. Why does he constantly refer to them as “illegals”? Is there no sense of human decency in him? While these PEOPLE may be in our country illegaly, they are still PEOPLE! They should be treated as such. Sheriff Jones and his jails are not doing this, but rather treating them inhumanly and unjustly! I am an English as a Second Language teacher in a local school district. I know these families, I see how they live and how hard they are working to give their children a better life. I know them and their lifestyle and their community. They are doing jobs that people here will not do. Many complain that they are taking jobs away. This is not so, the American community has become so lazy that they would rather sit around and collect welfare than go out and take these jobs back. They see these jobs as beneath them and therefore the undocumented population has come here to fill a void that Americans have created. The next time Sheriff Jones, or anyone else for that matter sees a dark skinned person, maybe he should first see the good they are doing for our economy and their families before labeling them “illegal” and trying to ship them back to somewhere they may not even be from! p.s.- If there is ANYONE willing to run agains Jones next election I will be glad to help you campaign!!!!

Dear tired of it:cant you come up with anything better then the same old excuse as to how hard working, law abiding and just trying to make a better life for their family. It may be true about many of these people but the fact is Americans need the jobs that are being taken by illegal aliens as we all know our jobs are leaving the country fast.It is well documented that illegal aliens consume far more in public benefits then they would ever pay from their taxes.Heres a thought for you, since you are so concerned about these law breakers having a better life you could leave with them (what ever country they are from)and teach there and help to campaign in their country to make things better.Bottom line is that the American public is tired of being called racists because we want our laws enforced you will need to come up with something better.American jobs for Americans not illegal immigrants get it?

Tired of it – Your rant is little more than self-serving as you benefit financially from their presence. And, in light of your profession, your rant is also highly disingenuous as know better than most that illegal alien is the appropriate term and classification. Yet, you write as if you’re oblivious. Please. I’d respect your veiled comments more if you’d just come out and admit that you ultimately seek to remove any name or label that denotes their illegal status to ultimately make their presence more palatable. Amazingly, tens of thousands of immigrants enter the U.S. legally each year, yet not the group you protect. And, unlike the segment of legal residents whom you so derogatorily described, your group unduly burdens our infrastructure. Plus, let’s not forget the crimes they commit; i.e., identity theft, vehicular violations, tax fraud, etc. But hey no further explanation needed as you admittedly know them intimately. Perhaps that’s why you have such disdain for Jones as your knowledge in and of itself is considered by many as aiding and abetting their crimes. I mean, it really can’t be because of Jones’ language is it? If so, then given the language you’ve used what’s that say about you? Sadly, you’ve exposed not only your own motivation and prejudices, but also your lack of understanding of the simple economic theory of supply and demand. And, given that the population you so willingly protect survives off housing, I’m a bit surprised that you’ve failed to recognize that yet given that a majority of, if not all wages within that sector have declined over the years because of an “over-supply” of workers. Regardless, despite your prejudices, your misguided beliefs and your imprudent arguments, there are actually many of us do care about the people you defend. So, please don’t say that we don’t care because of our unwillingness to overlook their illegal acts. Frankly, a vast majority of people have become tired of arguments like yours, especially when their sermonized to us by people who financially benefit from illegal aliens presence.
