The Oxford Summer Music Festival continues Thursday, July 2, with Stagger Lee, a country and rock band that has been performing at area events and locations since it was founded in 1981.
The band has been named “Best Band in Cincinnati” at the Cammy Awards multiple times and has also recorded in Nashville and performed in many clubs throughout the country.
Stagger Lee was founded by current member Bobby Joe Mueller and is named after the song made famous by Lloyd Prince.
While the band has undergone a number of transitions and personnel changes over the years, it continues to entertain audiences throughout the area.
Founder Bobby Joe Mueller plays acoustic guitar, harmonica and percussion when necessary along with his lead singing. Mueller has a smooth, soulful style that has been bringing audiences back for more than 25 years.
Guitarist and vocalist K.J. Summerville hails from Schenectady, N.Y., but joined Stagger Lee in 1994 and has been named Best Instrumentalist at the Cincinnati Cammy Awards multiple times since his move.
Kenny Holycross Jr. joined Stagger Lee in June 2005 and shares his drumming and lead/backup vocal talents. Holycross has lived in the Cincinnati area for many years and has played with many bands in the area since he began playing for his father’s band when he was 14 years old.
Guitarist and bassist Derek Johnson also began his music career early when he began playing gospel music with the Goads from Piqua. Johnson traveled the world with the Goads for 15 years and was able to play in many “gigs” with entertainers of all types including Amy Grant, Alan Thicke and Tammy Faye Baker. Johnson was also a charter member of Uncle Daddy and the Family Secret, which was voted Best Electric Folk Rock Band in the area a number of times.
