RedHawks tie OSU, but win another shootout

By Rick Cassano

COLUMBUS —

Miami University’s hockey team had to work extra time for an extra point Friday night.

The visiting RedHawks rallied for a 1-1 tie against Ohio State, then picked up another point in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings by winning the shootout 1-0 before a crowd of 4,345 at Value City Arena.

“I was happy with the way our team showed their character tonight,” said MU coach Enrico Blasi, whose squad is 10-3-4 overall and 7-3-3 in the CCHA with three shootout victories.

“For 65 minutes, both teams left it all on the ice. It’s just a typical rivalry game with Ohio State. It’s always one goal. It’s always a battle.”

Devon Krogh scored with 16:08 remaining in regulation for the Buckeyes (7-5-5, 6-2-3), and Curtis McKenzie countered on a one-timer with 7:17 left.

In the best-of-three shootout, Miami freshman goalie Jay Williams stopped all three shots. Austin Czarnik converted for the visitors on their second attempt.

“I think it’s the third or fourth shootout I’ve been in this season, so I’m starting to get used to it a little bit,” said Williams, who collected 22 saves. “You try to look at it as a challenge. It’s you vs. the other goalie pretty much head-to-head. It’s fun for me.”

Brady Hjelle was very good between the pipes for OSU and had 28 saves.

“Coaches hate shootouts because it’s a false sense if you win and it’s a false sense like you lost,” Ohio State coach Mark Osiecki said. “It was a well-played hockey game. It had to have been fun to watch.”

McKenzie’s goal came off assists from Riley Barber and Matthew Caito. It was a power-play tally, a rarity of late for the RedHawks.

“It’s not where we want it to be and where it should be, so it was nice to finally see that go in and get a little nerves off us,” McKenzie said. “I was just trying to find the open slot there. Barber’s the guy that will get you the puck every time you’re there.”

The teams will square off again tonight at 8:05 and are scheduled for at least five games this year. Next season, when the schools are in different leagues, Blasi said the rivalry will continue.

“We plan on playing every year,” the MU coach said. “We’ll have to limit it to two games home and home, and it’ll probably be at the beginning of the year. Every time we play Ohio State, I think our team gets a little bit better in different areas. Sometimes it’s something on the ice. Sometimes it’s a character check. Sometimes it’s guys coming together.”

It was exam week for both schools, making game preparation more difficult.

“We couldn’t leave Oxford until 1:30 (Friday) — we had guys running into the locker room to pack their bags,” Blasi said. “We probably shouldn’t be playing this week. These guys go through a lot.”
