Kil-Kare Dragway hosts the third Gathering of the Geezers — an old-time drag race, car show and swap meet — starting 8 a.m. Sunday.

NHRA Hall of Famer Roger Gustin serves as the Grand Marshall.

The event is organized by Ed Crowder, a self-described “gearhead” who has piloted and promoted racing for nearly 60 years. He also won at Kil-Kare Dragway the day it opened in 1959.

Among the highlights:

• Kil-Kare Dragway’s third hall of fame class will be announced.

• More than 50 trophies will be awarded.

• A Grandpa Eliminator division where the driver and car must be 50 years or older.

Other highlights this weekend include:

Kil-Kare Speedway: The Greene County track hosts its popular EMT/Firefighters Cot race tonight, with $500 going to the winning team.

Shady Bowl Speedway: The 3/10-mile oval will be racing for the Ronald McDonald House on Sunday, donating all grandstand proceeds to the charity.

The Ronald McDonald House provides families a place to stay near their hospitalized children and do so at little or no cost for the families.

The track also announced Aug. 21 as the make-up date for the Main Event Racing Series, which was postponed last Sunday. Grandstand tickets from last week can be used as rainchecks.

Also, the Pro 4 class has been removed from the remainder of the racing schedule due to low car counts.

Hot laps

• The Dayton Auto Race Fans Club (DARF) will host its Young Guns night on Sept. 27. Any rookie driver, regardless of age or series, is eligible to attend to share racing stories or season highlights. For those interested in displaying their cars between 4-7 p.m., please call DARF president Rick Monroe at (937) 541-9006.

Meetings are now held at Celebrations II Banquet Center on Poe Avenue in Dayton.

• West Virginia’s Travis Braden, who races at Kil-Kare and Columbus Motor Speedway, ranks 11th in the nation in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series standings and leads the national Rookie of the Year standings.

Braden has 10 wins in 22 starts, including six wins at Kil-Kare. “I expected to get a couple of wins, but we’re definitely further ahead than I planned,” Braden told NASCAR.com.
