OXFORD —
Ana Richter and Megan Richardson scored a combined 38 points, leading the Talawanda High School girls basketball team over Wilmington, 50-34, Saturday night.
“Wilmington was a huge test for us because they are at the next level,” THS coach Kim Richter said of her undefeated team. “I’m encouraged because as the year progresses our chemistry is continuing to develop, we are looking for each other and when we play against a hard team we aren’t going to fold.”
The Braves improved to 13-0 overall, while the Hurricanes fell to 10-3.
Talawanda, which trailed 13-8 after the first quarter, found its rhythm in the second even with Richter, who finished with 21 points, on the bench with two early fouls.
Richardson scored seven of Braves’ final nine points of the half. The junior guard got her own rebound and converted an and-1 layup at the 3:43 mark and rounded out the host’s first-half scoring with a baseline drive and a breakaway layup with 18 seconds to go. THS led 19-16 at the break.
“We all just started coming together and we just kept building as a team, and it just pumped us up big time,” said Richardson, who tallied 17 points, three boards and two helpers. “Once we got the lead, we wanted it and went after it.”
Talawanda ripped off an 11-2 run out of the half, which was led by Richer, who scored 11 points in the third. Wilmington didn’t hit its second bucket until the 1:50 mark. Savannah Hooper led the Hurricanes with 10 points and four rebounds, while Hannah Spurlock tallied nine points with five assists.
Richter, who verbally committed to play for Miami University during fall break, dominated in the paint, routinely beating her opponent for easy baskets at the rim. The junior forward finished 10-of-12 from the floor and added six rebounds with two assists.
“I think it’s just all my team,” she said. “We just had the momentum (coming out of halftime).”
The Braves’ height and length proved to be the deciding factor, as Wilmington was held to 28.9 percent shooting and 23.1 from deep. They were 5-of-12 from the charity stripe.
Talawanda finished 50 percent from the field and was 8-of-12 at the line. The Braves were 0-of-6 from downtown.
Talawanda’s Brilyn Webb had six points and three rebounds, while Bristyl Webb added seven assists with four boards.
