Another division equals another day of high school state football title games.
As expected, the Ohio High School Athletic Association added an extra day to championship weekend following the addition of a seventh division last fall. The OHSAA added a Thursday game to go with three games each on Friday and Saturday on Dec. 5-7.
Which divisions will play when and where was not addressed by the OHSAA. The Thursday recommendation was approved during the regular monthly OHSAA meeting.
Next season’s state football finals will be the last for the current contract at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium and Paul Brown Tiger Stadium at Massillon. All the state title games have been split there since 1991.
Football championship weekend will move to Ohio Stadium in Columbus in 2014-15 with an option for more years.
Member principals approved the addition of a seventh division with a new wrinkle. Rather than evenly split member schools in each division, as had been the practice, the top 10 percent of Division I schools – about 32 – were lumped into a smaller “super” division. That is hoped to be the answer to a long-simmering issue, the large disparity in D-I boys enrollment figures, which ranges from 494 to more than 1,100.
There were 717 OHSAA teams that played football last season. Division II (166) was the only other division with a boys enrollment disparity of triple digits.
Once a seventh division was added, the OHSAA’s task was to either start the title games a day earlier or extend the games to Sunday. The six-game format had games anchored at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. for the two Stark County sites.
That still could be an issue when the games move to the single location of Ohio Stadium.
Also upcoming is a proposed split of public and private schools in the postseason for all sports. A petition to have that voted on was forwarded to the OHSAA on Nov. 30, the last day to do so for the following school year. OHSAA member principals will vote on that in May.
Last season Clinton-Massie (D-IV), Coldwater (D-V) and Marion Local (D-VI) all won state football titles. Defending champ Trotwood-Madison (D-II) played in the title game for the third straight season.
