OXFORD — It’s an opportunity to play professional football. That’s all Chris Givens needs to hear.

The recent Miami University graduate didn’t get selected in last week’s NFL draft, but he agreed to a free-agent contract with the New Orleans Saints soon after it ended.

“Literally about 10 minutes after the draft I got a call from my agent explaining that a couple teams were interested in me,” said Givens, a 6-foot-1, 207-pound wide receiver. “He felt the Saints were the best fit for me.”

The Chillicothe native caught 157 passes for 2,121 yards and 15 touchdowns in his Miami career, graduating in December with a degree in health and sport studies.

Givens worked out at Miami and at Ignition in Mason in the days leading up to the draft.

He participated in a Pro Day session in front of NFL scouts March 1 and felt it went well, but he and his agent — Doug Oomen of Domann & Pittman Sports Representation and Management — were realistic about his chances of getting drafted.

“I figured I would probably be a free agent,” Givens said. “My agent consulted with me about it. So far, he’s been right about everything.”

Several NFL teams were in contact with Givens before the draft. The Saints, ironically, were not among them.

No matter. He’s thrilled about this chance to fulfill a lifelong dream. “It’s all about the opportunity to play,” said Givens, who noted that he’s a bit fuzzy on the financial details of his contract and isn’t worrying about them at this point. “I’ve been playing this game ever since I was 7 years old. To play professionally, or even having the chance to do that, is definitely a dream. I’m blessed to have this opportunity.”

Asked why he feels he’s ready to be a pro receiver, Givens replied:

“I’m someone who’s dedicated my entire life to this. From all the practices, the films, the injuries, the games you play, the blood, sweat and tears ... it grooms you for the next level.”

“I want to be a part of that fraternity of guys in the NFL,” Givens added. “Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?”

The Saints have some Miami connections, including head coach Sean Payton, assistant coach Aaron Kromer, and strength coaches Charles Byrd and Dan Dalrymple. Givens worked with Byrd as a freshman at MU.

Payton, of course, won’t be coaching this season, having been suspended by the NFL for his role in a bounty scandal. Givens said the controversy didn’t affect his decision to sign with New Orleans.

“That’s something that’s none of my business,” Givens said. “I’m just a player that’s trying to get in there and make a good impression and be a part of that organization.”

He will head south for the Saints’ rookie minicamp May 11-13.
