Unbeaten in MAC play, Miami turns focus to Falcons

By Rick Cassano

OXFORD —

The Mid-American Conference football season is now clearly in Miami University’s sights.

The RedHawks finished their nonconference schedule with a 52-14 loss at Cincinnati over the weekend, evening their record at 3-3.

Six MAC games remain for MU, with a trip to Bowling Green set for Saturday. A bye week will follow.

“All of our goals are still attainable,” said Miami quarterback Zac Dysert, who threw for 303 yards against UC and became the 78th player in Football Bowl Subdivision history to crack the 10,000-yard mark. “We control our own destiny right now.”

Asked if he thought the RedHawks could make a run for the MAC East Division championship, outside linebacker Chris Wade said yes.

“I think we have the potential,” he said. “I think if we all put our minds together, we can do it.”

Three teams are unbeaten in East play: Kent State (3-0), Ohio (2-0) and MU (2-0). Bowling Green is 1-1 in the East.

The Falcons (3-3) are coming off a 24-10 victory at Akron. BGSU trailed 10-0 at halftime, but outscored the Zips 17-0 and outgained them 228-4 in the third period.

Quarterback Matt Schilz has completed 115-of-205 passes for 1,251 yards and five touchdowns with five interceptions for Bowling Green. Anthon Samuel heads the ground attack (84 carries, 494 yards, eight TDs).

Middletown High School graduate Jerry “BooBoo” Gates is the Falcons’ starting strong safety, and former Middie Chip Robinson is the No. 2 center. Gates has 22 total tackles and a fumble recovery while averaging 41.0 yards on two punt returns and 19.8 yards on 12 kickoff returns.

Miami leads the series 42-21-5. The RedHawks have a 20-9-4 record at Bowling Green.

Dysert now has 10,246 career passing yards and ranks ninth in MAC history. He trails MU’s all-time leader, Ben Roethlisberger, by 583 yards.
