Zac Dysert is moving full speed ahead in his quest to play quarterback in the National Football League.
Dysert, who received a physical education degree from Miami University in December and is the RedHawks’ all-time leading passer, has received an invitation to participate in the Senior Bowl at 4 p.m. on Jan. 26 in Mobile, Ala.
“I’m very, very excited about it,” Dysert said Wednesday afternoon from Bradenton, Fla., where he’s training. “It’s a great opportunity to play with a lot of big-time guys.”
The 6-foot-4, 228-pound Ada native caught a break in regard to the Senior Bowl. Six quarterbacks are invited to play, and Dysert found out several weeks ago that he was seventh on the list.
But with Southern California’s Matt Barkley unable to play because of a shoulder injury, Dysert will get a chance to practice for a week and play in front of NFL personnel. The other QBs are Mike Glennon of North Carolina State, Landry Jones of Oklahoma, E.J. Manuel of Florida State, Ryan Nassib of Syracuse and Tyler Wilson of Arkansas.
“I was fortunate that it worked out,” Dysert said. “Practices are going to be just as important as the game.”
He is the 15th Miami player and the first since 2005 to earn an invitation to the nation’s premier senior showcase event. His agent is Mike McCartney of Priority Sports & Entertainment in Chicago.
Dysert is training six days a week with former Florida State and NFL quarterback Chris Weinke at IMG Academy in Florida. His 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. routine includes media, vision and nutrition training, NFL Combine drills, throwing and film study.
Also on Dysert’s calendar are the NFL Combine in Indianapolis (quarterbacks will work out Feb. 21-24) and Pro Day in Oxford (likely in March). Weinke will put him through his Pro Day workout.
“It’s all pretty crazy, but something I’ve been looking forward to,” Dysert said. “It’s been a dream of mine for a long time, and it’s awesome that the opportunity is finally here.”
Miami wide receiver Andy Cruse will play in the Casino Del Sol College All-Star Game at 9 p.m. on Friday in Tucson, Ariz.
