Miami-CMU matchup features coaching friends

By Rick Cassano

Dan Enos is looking forward to seeing a friend Saturday afternoon.

Enos, Central Michigan University’s football coach, worked with Miami coach Don Treadwell at two different schools. This week, the Chippewas and RedHawks will square off at Kelly/Shorts Stadium in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

“Coach Treadwell and I are very good friends,” Enos said Monday during the weekly Mid-American Conference coaches call. “I have the utmost respect for him as a professional and as a person.”

The two men coached together for two seasons at Cincinnati (2004-05) and three years at Michigan State (2007-09). Treadwell was the offensive coordinator in all five of those campaigns, while Enos coached the quarterbacks at UC and the running backs at MSU.

“I’ve always believed Dan was a work in progress in terms of being a head coach,” Treadwell said. “You can just sense certain guys are meant to be leaders. He’s always had that ability to put things together and see the big picture.”

Miami (4-6, 3-3 in the MAC East Division) and Central Michigan (4-6, 2-4 in the MAC West) have had similar seasons. Both need to win their last two games to become bowl eligible — the RedHawks host Ball State and the Chippewas visit Massachusetts on Nov. 23.

CMU had to rally from 14-0 and 21-10 deficits to post a 34-31 win at Eastern Michigan last weekend. Zurlon Tipton ran 21 times for 110 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Ryan Radcliff was 20-of-34 for 284 yards and two scores.

“It’s not how you diagram it when you picture winning a football game, but it was nice to come from behind and have a fourth-quarter lead and be able to protect it,” Enos said.

“We talk to our players constantly about being able to handle adversity. We’ve had several games this year where we’ve had leads in the third and fourth quarter and haven’t been able to hang on to win. Give credit to our players and coaches just continuing to believe in what we’re doing and continuing to believe in one another.”

Enos said there’s no secret about the key player for the RedHawks. It’s senior quarterback Zac Dysert (250-of-397, 2,922 yards, 22 touchdowns).

“I think he’s an NFL player,” Enos said. “I think he’s probably the best quarterback in this league, and that’s saying a lot because I think there’s a lot of very good quarterbacks in this league. I’m very, very impressed with his accuracy, with his poise, with his mobility and decision making.”

Honor roll: The MAC announced its Players of the Week on Monday.

In the East Division, the honorees were Bowling Green running back Anthon Samuel (offense), Buffalo defensive back Cortney Lester (defense) and Massachusetts punter Colter Johnson (special teams). West Division awards went to Toledo running back David Fluellen (offense), Ball State end Nick Miles (defense) and Toledo place-kicker Jeremiah Detmer (special teams).
