COLUMBUS —

Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer was handed a sheet of 40-yard-dash times from the summer. And while the list tells him he’s got plenty of burners, the Buckeyes still look too much like a lumbering team to him.

“(Receiver) Evan Spencer ran a 4.4-something. Evan Spencer isn’t running a 4.4 out there,” Meyer said Monday, meaning the practice field. “There’s some fast times out there that our strength coach gave me, but they don’t play real fast.”

Meyer’s teams have always had speed in abundance, and his offense depends on getting the ball to his swiftest players in open spaces. But the roster he inherited isn’t overflowing with greyhounds.

One Buckeye who fits the criteria currently is sidelined. All-purpose back Jordan Hall is still wearing a protective boot after cutting a tendon in his foot and is expected to miss a couple of games.

Meyer is searching for players who know, as he puts it, how to get from Point A to Point B. And he’s seen some flashes through the first two practices.

“The guy who looked good today was (receiver) Devin Smith. My gosh, do we need someone like that to do something,” he said.

“He ran a … streak route. It was ridiculous. That’s what we need.”

Meyer also mentioned freshman linebacker Jamal Marcus.

“He doesn’t know which way is up right now, but he knows Point A to Point B,” he said. “He’ll run over anything in his way to get to Point B. We’ll find a way to get him on the field.

“We’re not going to waste time with guys who aren’t Point-A-to-Point-B people. We have to identify who are the Point-A-to-Point-B guys on the team right now.”

Meyer was pleased by what he saw from the passing game, which he had labeled a “clown show” during the spring.

Asked about quarterback Braxton Miller, Meyer said: “To give him this (a thumbs up), it’s too early. … But Braxton had a good practice. He had a really good day. He feels good about it. He made the comment to me that he knows what he’s doing. He doesn’t know yet. There’s still a lot more to go. I winked at him and said, ‘Yeah right, pal.’ “

Meyer also addressed some disciplinary issues. Offensive tackle Jack Mewhort and tight end Jake Stoneburner have been fully reinstated after the seniors were suspended and taken off scholarship during the summer. They pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.

Freshman running back Bri’onte Dunn also is facing a disorderly conduct charge. Marijuana and drug paraphenalia were found in the car Dunn was driving, but police don’t believe it belonged to him.

“We did some tests, and everything came back that he was being honest with me,” Meyer said. “However, if there’s a charge that sticks, there will be a penalty like all the kids who have them get.”
