FAIRBORN —

The losing streak continues to grow.

Miami University’s men’s basketball team suffered its fourth-straight defeat Wednesday night in a tough, physical matchup against host Wright State, which hit 30 of 38 free throws to post a 67-59 triumph at the Nutter Center.

“We didn’t play well enough. I thought they played better from a mental toughness standpoint,” RedHawks coach John Cooper said. “They made all the winning plays, as I always talk about. In the guts of the game, they were able to make positive things happen.”

Allen Roberts scored 16 points and Jon Harris added 10 for MU (3-6), which committed 31 personal fouls and had four players foul out. The visitors were also hit with three technicals (by Roberts, Quinten Rollins and Cooper).

All of the technicals came in the final 8:06 as the Raiders (8-3) pulled away from a 55-53 lead with 9 consecutive points down the stretch.

“I’m not going to discuss calls and everything because that’s not the reason we did not win the game,” Cooper said. “It started off on the boards. We couldn’t get ‘em off the boards, so it was just a microcosm of the game as (it) went along. We certainly put ourselves in a position to get back in the game, but they came up with the loose balls when they needed to.”

Miami did continue to struggle on the glass, getting outrebounded 42-27. Harris and Rollins each snagged six caroms for the RedHawks, while Tavares Sledge had nine for WSU.

Miles Dixon tallied 21 points and Jerran Young chipped in 19 for Wright State, which overcame 34 percent shooting and 19 turnovers. MU turned the ball over 21 times.

Raiders coach Billy Donlon felt his squad was outplayed in the first half. It was 21-21 at the break.

“I thought we were very soft with the ball in the first half,” Donlon said. “It was kind of ugly, but I’m proud of our guys. It was a nonconference conference game, a very physical game.”

Miami only led twice (5-4 and 21-19) playing in front of a crowd of 3,470. The RedHawks were just 11 of 21 at the charity stripe and shot 42.6 percent from the field.

MU will return home to face Illinois Chicago (9-2) on Saturday afternoon after taking four straight road losses.

“It’s time to get the ship right,” Roberts said. “We’ve got to defend the home court. It’s still a long season.”

Young (11 of 14) and Dixon (11 of 12) did most of the free-throw damage for Wright State. Matt Vest collected 7 rebounds, and Cole Darling and Young both added 6.

The Raiders travel to Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon.
