About Wright State: The Raiders ride a three-game winning streak into the championship game. They have shot 56, 49 and 52 percent in those three games. That’s their best three-game stretch of shooting this season. … This is Wright State’s fourth appearance in the Horizon League championship game. The Raiders beat Butler 60-55 in 2007, lost to Butler 70-45 in 2010 and lost 73-59 to Green Bay in 1995. … Wright State is seeking its third NCAA Division I tournament appearance. It made the field in 1993 and in 2007. … The Raiders have their most wins since the 2007-08 season. They have won more than 21 games only once since moving to Division I in 1987-88 (23-10 in 2006-07).
About Valparaiso: The Crusaders have won five games in a row, including a 70-69 win over Green Bay in Saturday’s semifinals on a last-second 3-pointer by Broekhoff. They haven’t lost two games in a row all season. … Broekhoff and Van Wijk have 2,594 career points between them. … This is Valparaiso’s second championship game appearance. It hosted the final last year and lost 70-50 to No. 3 seed Detroit. … Valparaiso beat Wright State 69-63 on Jan. 19 at Valparaiso and 68-61 on Feb. 12 at the Nutter Center. Last year, the teams split the regular-season series. Wright State won 73-55 at the Nutter Center, and Valparaiso won 63-54 at home.
Billy Donlon on Valparaiso: “I think if we play as well as we did the first time, we’re right there. We’re up one with a minute to go on their home court. That says a lot for our team. They just made winning plays we didn’t make. That’s why they beat Green Bay. Matt Kenney’s 3 (with seven seconds left) is as important as Ryan Broekhoff’s 3. That’s why they’re good. Other guys that are good players that probably don’t get talked about enough can really beat you: Bogan, Kenney. You can make the case that Van Wijk is the best player in the league. I’m not saying Ryan Broekhoff is not. I’m just saying you can make the case Van Wijk is. If you take Broekhoff off Valpo, Van Wink would score more than he does because they’ve got to have balance.”
