OXFORD —
The bump in the road is history, though it hasn’t been forgotten.
Miami University’s women’s basketball team began Mid-American Conference play with a stunning 62-59 loss at Ball State, but rebounded with a resounding 73-47 triumph at Western Michigan last Sunday.
Now the RedHawks, who haven’t had a home game since Dec. 4, will play at Millett Hall twice this week. Thursday’s game against Ohio starts at 7 p.m., and Sunday’s contest against Eastern Michigan tips at 2 p.m.
“I’d say Ball State was a little bit of a wakeup call,” MU junior guard Haley Robertson admitted. “I’m still confident in everyone on the team. We’re still aiming for that ultimate goal of winning the MAC, and we’re ready to take it.”
Miami coach Maria Fantanarosa is excited about the fact that she now has a full roster. Junior guard Hannah Robertson and junior forward Erica Almady returned from injuries to play against WMU.
“We had 12 options, 12 talented players,” Fantanarosa said. “I believe that as we continue to get healthy, we’re going to be a very strong team again. Even having Hannah and Erica at 80, 90 percent makes our team different. More people are playing quality minutes and not just quantity minutes, and that’s making a huge difference.
“We don’t have any excuses. It’s January. We know we have the talent. If we can stay healthy, we can really start focusing on taking this team to the next level.”
Fantanarosa was exasperated with the showing at Ball State, with the Cardinals bringing a 3-10 record into that contest. She believes it will help her squad in the long run.
“They know they were flat, and they know it can’t happen again,” said Fantanarosa, whose unit is 9-6 overall and 1-1 in the MAC East Division.
Haley Robertson has stepped forward offensively in the last two games, sinking 8 of 13 treys. She tossed in a career-high 15 points against BSU, then topped that with a 19-point effort against WMU.
Robertson, a 5-foot-8 native of New Albany, is averaging 5.5 points per game.
“I was taking probably around the same amount of shots early in the season — I just wasn’t hitting them,” she said. “But I was able to find my stroke over break because I was able to get in the gym and work a little bit more.”
Will her streak of career highs continue Thursday against the Bobcats (5-9, 0-2)? “I don’t know,” Robertson said with a laugh. “I’ll just take whatever they give me.”
“Haley is a team player,” Fantanarosa said. “She’s not been the focus of scouting reports, and she’s made people pay for it. She’s doing all the little things while taking an opportunity to be a scorer as well. She’s just outworking people, and that’s sparking our team.”
Miami senior guard Courtney Osborn is the MAC’s No. 2 scorer with an 18.0 average. She trails Akron’s Rachel Tecca (18.7).
