Reds' fate falls on Latos for NLDS game 5

CINCINNATI —

Today the weight of the Reds’ world falls on the shoulders of Mat Latos, who was 7 in the fall of 1995 when the Reds last clinched a postseason series.

The right-hander, who was traded to the Reds last December, gets the ball in Game 5 of the National League Division Series at Great American Ball Park. The game will start at 1:07 p.m., unless the Tigers won the late game Wednesday, in which case it will be pushed back to 2:07.

The Giants have all the momentum after an 8-3 victory Wednesday, but Latos has a 0.56 ERA in 16 innings against the Giants this season.

“I feel great. Everything feels fine,” Latos said. “It’s another game. It’s a team that I’m comfortable with, a team I’ve faced before. I’ve just got to go out there and pitch my game.”

Latos was the second Reds pitcher off the bench after Johnny Cueto left Game 1 with a strained oblique muscle. He pitched four innings and allowed one run.

“Matty is the type of person who’s going to go up there with some swag and get people out,” second baseman Brandon Phillips said. “Hopefully, he can do his job, and our bats will wake up.”

Giants start Cain: Matt Cain, who gave up three runs in five innings in Game 1, gets the Game 5 start for the Giants. Cain had thrown 23 2/3 straight scoreless innings in the postseason before Phillips homered off him in Game 1.

“I think the biggest thing is I will try to go into it like a normal start,” Cain said. “But in the back of your mind, you’re thinking it’s an elimination game. One of us could go home.”

Cain said he may have been too anxious in Game 1.

“I made more mistakes than even showed up,” he said. “I think I will try to think back to other starts and be more calm and relaxed and worried about making good pitches, instead of just going out there and firing it up there. Just try to make less mistakes and minimize the damage.”

Lineup shakeup: Todd Frazier started at third Wednesday in place of Scott Rolen, who was 2-for-11 in Games 1 and 2.

Frazier was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. He walked with the bases loaded in the first to drive in the first run.

“It’s the same thing I’ve been doing all year long,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “After day games, I usually don’t play Scott. Even though this is an afternoon game and yesterday was an evening game, it’s a situation where I’m going to get asked no matter who plays.”

The other lineup change was Dioner Navarro starting at catcher instead of Ryan Hanigan. Navarro was 1-for-3 and struck out twice.

Big crowds: The Reds drew the third-largest crowd in Great American Ball Park history Wednesday (44,375). The crowd on Tuesday was the second-largest (44,501). Only Game 3 of the 2010 NLDS drew more (44,599).
