The Oxford Fire Department responded to reports of a small fire in the basement of a Miami University residence hall this afternoon, Tuesday, May 12.

Oxford Fire Captain Mike Matix said a minor fire started in a basement mechanical room of Hamilton Hall, likely from the motor of an air compressor.

A responding Miami University police officer allegedly covered his mouth with a shirt and entered the smoke-filled basement, putting out the flames using an extinguisher.

“When we got down there, there was nothing to it,” Matix said. “We just tried to clean things up a bit and take some of the smoke out with a fan.”

Sally Shepherd, the general manager of the hall, said fire alarms sounded at around 3:30 p.m. A crew of workers were performing routine maintenance on the building at the time, she said.
