Local children enjoyed two Hooked on Fishing events at the Izaak Walton League on July 6 and 8.
According to Sergeant Jim Squance, these events and a fishing derby for the public held earlier in the summer are all geared toward the same thing.
“(The aim is to) steer kids away from drugs and alcohol by [providing] wholesome family outdoor activities,” Squance said.
Squance said that research has shown that fishing helps kids build confidence and self-esteem and can greatly benefit them.
“The kids learn to appreciate others and the natural world around them,” Squance said.
“The cops that put on the program enjoy the experience just as much as the kids,” Squance added.
The Hooked on Fishing Program began in Florida in 1986. The Future Fisherman Foundation wanted to steer children away from drugs and alcohol, teach them about fishing and help them understand ownership of aquatic resources.
According to Squance, “The foundation promotes participation and education in fishing and the enhancement and protection of aquatic resources.”
