OXFORD — Oxford medics twice responded to accidents Wednesday in which pedestrians were struck by vehicles, including one who was flown by medical helicopter..
Shortly before 4 p.m., a Miami University student was injured after being struck by a pickup truck. The 18-year-old female was attempting to cross U.S. 27 in a crosswalk near the Shriver Center on Miami’s campus when she was struck by the southbound vehicle.
A driver stopped in the southbound left turn lane had signed her to cross, according to police.
As of late Wednesday night, police had not released the victim’s name. She was flown by medical helicopter to University Hospital just after 4:30 p.m.
The driver of the pickup, 26-year-old Bernell Rumpke, was not injured. He was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
The intersection near Western Drive, which leads to several residence halls, has been the site of at least two other pedestrian crashes this year.
In a second incident Wednesday, a pedestrian was struck at the intersection of Chestnut and Locust streets. The accident occurred about 5:48 p.m., according to an Oxford Police dispatcher.
The dispatcher said an ambulance was on scene but was unable to provide more information.
No additional information about the accident was released by police late Wednesday night.
On Nov. 26, a 75-year-old woman was struck and killed by a vehicle on U.S. 27 between the intersections of Locust Street and Westgate Drive.
On Sept. 27, 29-year-old Randalla Wright of Liberty, Ind. struck and killed a 1-year-old boy with her SUV. Wright was arrested shortly after the incident.
