OXFORD— Miami University students and the Community Blood Center have teamed up for a blood drive competition against Ohio University.
All 115 spots were filled during the first chance to give blood Friday, Jan. 22 in the Heritage Room of Shriver Center.
There is one more chance for students to donate blood on Feb. 24 for the drive, which is being held in honor of Miami football legend John Pont, who passed away in 2008.
“We’re asking students to roll up their sleeves for a good cause,” said Tracy Morgan, donor relations manager for the Community Blood Center.
The drive marks the second annual competition against Ohio University. Results are based on student population and how many students come to donate.
“I want to help out people who really need it,” said Ryan Kirvonick, a student who attended the blood drive Friday. Kirvonick heard about the blood drive through an e-mail with the Residence Hall Association.
“People just don’t realize how important it is to give,” said Annie Mumpower, who is part of the A K Psi business fraternity, an organization that helped with the blood drive.
“You can save three lives and it only takes an hour,” Mumpower added.
The Community Blood Center is also giving out special edition T-shirts for those who donate. They are very appreciative of Miami students and their willingness to support the cause.
If anyone wants to sponsor a blood drive, they are urged to contact the Community Blood Center at 1-800-38-GIVE.
On Feb. 24, there will be 140 spots open for all students to donate.
Students can go to www.donortime.com and use the sponsor code “963” to schedule an appointment.
The winning university will be announced Feb. 24 during a basketball game in Athens.
