Staff Report Updated 9:40 AM Tuesday, January 5, 2010

An overnight snow of about an inch in the area made the morning commute rough Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Several school districts were on a two-hour delay. Some schooled closed, including Lakota Local Schools, Fairfield City Schools, Fenwick High School, Hamilton Christian and the Butler Tech school district.

Jeffrey Sites, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Wilmington said the area could expect scattered snow showers throughout the day with highs in the mid 20s. Snow accumulation should be less than one inch. Tuesday’s low should be 10 to 15 degrees.

Road conditions in Warren and Butler counties remained slick around 8:50 a.m. as icy conditions caused problems, dispatchers said.

In Warren County, six accidents had been reported on county roadways since midnight, according to dispatchers. Two of the accidents involved injuries.

The Ohio Highway Patrol reported several accidents on Interstate 75 and 71.

I-71 north at Fields-Ertel Road was restricted to two lanes of travel Monday night after a semi-trailer went off the road leaking fuel on the roadway.

Officials warn that state Route 741 and Greentree Road; state routes 122 and 123 in the Red Lion area; and rural roads are particularly hazardous.

In Waynesville, a water main break was caused by the cold conditions, dispatchers said.

The next snow storm system is scheduled to come on Thursday, with 1 to 3 inches or 2 to 4 inches expected, Sites said.

Officials from the Butler County Engineer’s Office said Tuesday they had a full crew working the streets since 6:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 4.

Fifteen salt trucks and plows were preparing streets with salt brine and calcium chloride, and clearing roadways of blowing snow, according to Operations Deputy Scott Bressler.

He said the cold weather can create problems with some treatments — especially pre-treatments — although the liquid calcium that’s loaded onto the department’s trucks help to “boost” street clearing efforts.

“It obviously effects how we treat the streets,” Bressler said of the cold weather. “But we’ll get the streets cleared and then get ready for Thursday.”

Streets — especially main roads and some secondary — in West Chester and Liberty townships were mostly cleared by 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Emergency personnel in West Chester and Liberty reported few accidents, none of which were severe. Monroe dispatchers reported at 8:50 a.m. roads were being treated and there had been no accidents.

No accidents were reported overnight or Tuesday morning in Fairfield Twp. The City of Fairfield reported a private snow plow hit a utility pole on Hicks Boulevard around 4:30 a.m. An accident also occurred at Resor and Winton roads around 7 a.m. Tuesday.

The City of Middletown reported one accident, while Hamilton reported four accidents between the hours of 6 and 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The roads were not top bad. Many schools were on a 2hr delay, however I just cant understand why Lakota took a day off, considering Thursday, which it will get worse. Are they going to do that next year, when we have 3!Dont copy schools, its not professional!

We need a ton of snow. I was hoping that last night's snow would be enough to keep the bad guys inside. But they were shooting the town up again this morning. Hopefully when the police figure out who is committing all of these street crimes, they will put a few holes in them and be done with it. Leave the bodies in the street for a day or two to send a message to all other criminals.

Since salt isn't very effective below 20 and the snow largely blew around, there wasn't much problem driving in town if you drove carefully. Save your griping for Thursday.
Not that bad

It started snowing last night yet the streets were icy in the morning. Do we live in a one plow city? I can't believe that the salt and sand trucks didn't know it was snowing. Who is in charge of city streets? Get you butt out of the warm bed and do your job.
