Staff Report Updated 12:10 PM Monday, November 23, 2009

It’s time again for the Oxford community to recognize those people who use their talents to make our community a better place.

As 2009 comes to a close, The Oxford Press and Oxford Kiwanis Club ask you to look back on the past year and tell us who has made Oxford special through the annual Citizen of the Year Program.

Everyone is invited to make a nomination to the program, which is now in its 58th year.

There are two categories for honorees. Citizen of the Year is presented to men and women who have contributed materially to making Oxford a better place to live, with an emphasis on the current year. Citizen of the Years honors those whose commitment to community service covers a longer span of time.

Nominations will be accepted until noon Dec. 4.

Recipients for 2009 will be announced in the Jan. 1 edition of The Oxford Press. The recipients also will be honored at a Kiwanis Club luncheon early in 2010, at which time they will be presented with certificates featuring the exclusive covered bridge sketch by the late Raymond Bourne.

Previous recipients are invited to attend the selection meeting at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 5 in the Scarlet Oak Room in the clubhouse at the Knolls of Oxford.

Nominations, which must be in writing, should be mailed or dropped off at The Oxford Press or sent by e-mail to mengle@coxohio.com. Additional information and a letter detailing the person’s contributions will aid the selection committee in fully considering all nominations.

The awards were initiated in 1952 by Avis W. Cullen, then editor and publisher of Oxford’s weekly newspaper, as a means of expressing appreciation and encouraging community service.

In 2008, Jim Rubenstein was recognized as Man of the Year and Mary Jane Roberts as Woman of the Year. Jack Daugherty was honored as Man of the Years, Linda Williams as Woman of the Years and Jim and Sue Killy as Couple of the Years.
