MIDDLETOWN — Obama for America will open its fourth Ohio campaign office today in Middletown.

A grand opening ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the office located at 1028 Central Ave. in downtown Middletown. Greg Schultz, director of Ohio’s Organizing for America, will speak at the opening of the office for President Obama supporters.

“There are a lot of volunteers in Middletown that will allow us to open the office,” said Jessica Kershaw, a campaign official with Obama for America. “The primary responsibilities will be conducting phone banks and launching points for canvassing door-to-door when it’s warmer.”

Ohio’s chapter of Obama for America plans to open field offices in all of the state’s 88 counties, as it did in 2008, Kershaw said.

Schultz said when looking toward the November election, voters should keep in mind the improvements Obama has made in the auto and manufacturing industries.

“Without the president, the American auto industry wouldn’t exist,” Schultz said.

Schultz said according to the Center For Auto Research, 12.4 percent of Ohioans have auto manufacturing jobs compared to the national average is 9 percent.

David Kern, executive chairman of the Butler County Republican Party, said conversely that Obama’s term as president has been “a severe, drastic disappointment.” Kern cited Obama’s delayed decision on using of the Keystone Pipeline System to bring in less expensive energy from Canada.

“There’s been a failure to produce; look at the job market and businesses closing,” Kern said.

Similarly, state Rep. Margy Conditt, R-Liberty Twp., said voters should recall the failed economic stimulus plan and $15 trillion budget deficit when deciding who to vote for.

“I can’t handle another four years under the Obama administration,” Conditt said. “The mandate for employers and insurers to include sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs in health care plans is horrible.”

The Middletown office will be staffed by volunteers and open everyday during regular business hours.

Two upcoming phone banks are planned at the new location: 5 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. Saturday. Anyone is welcome to attend and help.
