OXFORD — Miami University is working on recruiting more students from the Western regions of the United States, primarily California.

Miami predicts fewer high school graduates from the university’s primary out-of-state markets, like Illinois, Michigan and Pennsylvania, said Laurie Koehler, director of admissions.

But, there is great potential for the university to continue accepting students from out of state with the growth of applicants from California.

“Over the past couple of years, Miami has tried to grow its presence in California by investing in some creative Web marketing, enhancing name buys, increasing communications sequences and participating in some high profile recruitment events such as the Bay Area Case Studies and the Los Angeles Renegade Case Studies programs,” Koehler said.

Koehler said Miami University is working on a new professional admission recruitment position, based in California.

Miami is not the only university to utilize the opportunity of having a regional recruiter in the West.

In fact, more than 100 colleges and universities have already created West Coast-based recruitment positions to boost applications.

“The regional recruiter will have the advantage of a strong physical presence in the region, and will thus be able to participate in not only college fairs, but also high school visits, panels, evening receptions for students and families and admission case studies programs,” Koehler said.

The regional recruiter also will be able to have stronger relationships with high school counselors, community-based organization leaders, community college counselors and Miami alumni.
